SUMMARY:


Under the direction of the Airfield Maintenance Supervisor, the Airfield Equipment Technician is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and overhauling gasoline and diesel-powered equipment, including heavy construction and snow removal equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.


  • Completes minor and major repairs, preventative maintenance on all airport vehicles and airfield motorized equipment.
  • Troubleshoots machines and equipment that have critical mechanical problems.
  • Performs periodic inspections of vehicles and equipment in compliance with provisions of the Operations Manual.
  • Prepares and maintains detailed records such as preventive maintenance schedules and time, materials, and equipment use reports.
  • Assists Airfield Maintenance Supervisor in assessing the need and feasibility of major repairs and/or modifications of individual pieces of equipment.
  • Monitors and maintains parts inventory, ordering as necessary.
  • Maintains a record of motor fuel consumption and schedules deliveries of fuel when needed.
  • Maintains shop areas (including storage areas associated with mechanical work), tools and equipment used in mechanical repairs in a clean and orderly fashion.
  • Assists in snow removal as necessary.
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential mechanical problems and suggestions for new and/or improved ways of addressing such problems.
  • Follows and complies with all safety and work rules and regulations.
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

**Education, Experience and/or Training

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.; AND
  • Considerable experience in maintenance and repair of automotive and construction equipment; OR
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the operation of complex and motorized equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools, materials, methods, and practices in mechanical repair of all types of gasoline and dieselpowered equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions used in equipment repair.
  • Ability to learn the FAA regulations and other federal, state, and local regulations that affect the operations of an airport.
  • Ability to estimate time and materials for equipment repair.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining operating conditions, making repairs and meeting emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and nontechnical language
  • Ability to use handheld and ground radios to effectively communicate and report physical location at all times, especially when inside restricted areas of airport grounds.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Ability to pass a postemployment offer physical examination and drug screen.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation to obtain unescorted Airport Identification/Access privileges.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and possession of a valid driver's license.
