WORK OBJECTIVE
This is a civilian position that performs specialized, technical work involving the enforcement of fire and life safety regulations. Duties also involve promoting public awareness and education regarding fire safety practices. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fire Marshal.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • The Fire Inspector conducts regular inspections of businesses and premises in order to determine compliance with applicable codes, standards, and city ordinances.
  • Conducts followup inspections as necessary to enforce compliance with written discrepancies.
  • Responsible for the processing of all noncomplaint cases to the Code Enforcement Board for final disposition.
  • Maintains a record file for all inspections conducted and notices issued.
  • Reviews plans and blueprints for construction, fire alarms, and sprinkler systems to determine adequacy and compliance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Works with schools, clubs, and civic organizations to promote fire safety awareness and directs departmental fire prevention activities.
  • Develops and presents educational classes on fire prevention and safety and develops fire evacuation plans upon request.
  • Performs other jobrelated duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School graduate or GED.
  • Must hold and maintain a current State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector Certificate.
  • Must have an understanding of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the National Response Plan (NRP), as well as the Incident Command System (ICS) qualified through the completion of recognized training and education courses.
  • All required certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class D driver's license and satisfactory driving record as determined by a City of Winter Garden designated agent.
  • Must successfully complete all prehire testing requirements including, but not limited to, a background screen, drug testing, and a medical physical.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may qualify an applicant for consideration.


Exceptions to the minimum qualifications must be reviewed by the Human Resources Director and approved by the City Manager prior to job offer.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Develop a thorough knowledge of fire hazards in various types of construction and in storage of flammable liquids and materials.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of accepted practices of fire safety and inspection techniques.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of the Fire Department and its operations.
  • Considerable working knowledge of fire codes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read blueprints, maintain appropriate records, and prepare reports.

PHYSICAL & ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions with exposure to varying weather conditions including inclement weather, heat, humidity, and cold, as well as dust, fumes, noise, uneven surfaces, and poor lighting.
  • Daily exposure to conditions of buildings or facilities under varying stages of construction, demolition, or disrepair, including materials used in the building trade.
  • Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts; high/precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; and risk of electrical shock and vibration.
  • Continual light work and occasional heavy work that involves intermittent reaching with hands and arms, stretching, twisting, and crawling. Position also frequently requires long periods of walking, standing, sitting, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crouching, balancing, reaching, bending, grasping, handling, feeling with hands and fingers, finger/hand dexterity, hearing, speech, driving a vehicle, and remaining alert at all times.
  • Moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination and the ability to occasionally climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces.
  • Requires sufficient visual acuity (i.e., read plans and blueprints, see details of objects, distinguish between colors and shapes, etc.), periods of prolonged visual concentration both near and far, and the ability to hear above considerable noise levels (i.e., at building sites).
  • Ability to regularly move and/or lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds.
