    We are currently hiring for the role of an

    experienced

    Codes Enforcement Officer


    with the potential for advancement to the position of Chief Building Official upon the retirement of the current incumbent at the end of the year.

    This position offers a unique opportunity for an experienced professional to make a significant impact in both code enforcement and leadership within our city.

    The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in upholding building codes, overseeing inspections, and the potential for future supervision of departmental operations.

    Essential Duties Performed

    Codes Enforcement Officer Duties
    Enforcing various City codes related to building, development, health and sanitation, public nuisances, and more.

    Conducting inspections of commercial and residential buildings for code compliance under currently adopted City codes.
    Issuing permits.
    Overseeing the operation of the Codes Department, including budget preparation and staff supervision.
    Administering and enforcing sections of the municipal code pertaining to building regulations and standards.
    Collaborating with other city departments and personnel on code-related issues and projects.
    Acting as an arbitrator between various professionals concerning technical requirements of codes and municipal ordinances.
    Preparing reports, notices of violations, and other related documentation as necessary.
    Chief Building Official Duties

    Oversee the Codes Department, including budgeting, supervision, and personnel management.
    Ensure that all construction projects comply with applicable building codes, safety regulations, and zoning laws.
    Manage the review and approval process for building permits, plans, and inspections.
    Supervise and mentor staff, providing guidance and training as necessary.
    Serve as the primary point of contact for building code interpretation and enforcement.
    Represent the department in meetings with city officials, developers, and the public.
    Must be willing to work overtime, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
    Other duties as assigned such as the municipal building facility maintenance coordination.

    Minimum Education Requirements

    Minimum of three years of recent experience in a City or County as a Codes Enforcement Officer.
    Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes, regulations, and ordinances.
    Inspector certification.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Ten (10) years of experience in inspection or construction, at least three of which have been in a supervisory role.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    Considerable knowledge of the Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, Electrical and Energy Code; considerable knowledge of current building construction methods, materials, tools and equipment;
    Ability to detect hazards and violations and detail what the codes will require during field inspection work;
    Ability to enforce regulations with firmness, tact and impartiality in field inspection

    work;
    Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the various phases of inspection services ;
    Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written

    form;
    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, government officials and the general public;
    Ability to read and accurately interpret plans and specifications of any complexity and to compare them with construction in progress;
    Some knowledge of environmental laws and

    processes.

    Physical Demands

    Work is performed in field and office settings. Outdoor work is required in the inspection of various land uses and other matters. Indoor work requires hand-eye coordination to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.

    Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound.

    Use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tool, or

    controls.
    Stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms, push, or pull, lift and make repetitive motions.

    Employee will frequently be required to lift or carry 125 pounds and occasionally push or pull up to 50 pounds.

    Stand, walk, sit, and climb or

    balance.
    Utilize close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust focus, depth perception and peripheral vision. Visually inspect for small defects which may involve small parts.
    Utilize measuring

    devices.
    Operate motor vehicles or

    equipment.
    Observe general surrounds and

    activities.

    Be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and verbally communicate detailed or important instructions to others, when necessary, accurately, loudly, or quickly.

    Prepare and analyze written or computer

    data.
    Be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
    Work in high, precarious places with exposure to risk of electrical

    shock.
    Work in a moderately noisy

    location.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, aswellasinhigh, precariousplaces.
    Theemployeemaybeexposedtowetand/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, with risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in an outdoor work environment is usually moderate to

    high.
