    Position Information

    New Hanover County Public Library is looking for a Casual Part-Time customer service staff member to engage with the public and provide a welcoming library experience. This position will primarily work in the Local History Room at the Main Library. As the primary point of contact for library services, this position requires extensive interaction with patrons, both in-person and by telephone. In addition, this position answers basic questions and refers patrons to other resources as needed.Good interpersonal skills, friendliness, and a positive attitude are essential for this position. Position expectations include, but are not limited to:

    Essential Duties
    • Informing patrons of library programs and services
    • Assisting with Library opening and closing procedures
    • Using the integrated library system (ILS) to process materials and register patrons.
    • Accurately shelving library materials.
    • Answering inquiries or referring inquiries to the appropriate service desk.

    Hours:

    Varying schedule with flex hours each week to meet the needs of the location. Libraries are open M-Th 10 am-7 pm, Fri-Sat 10 am-5 pm, Sun 1 pm- 5 pm. A minimum of 8 hours per week with potential for up to 19 hours per week.

    Employment Type:Casual Part Time, non-exempt

    Salary Information:The hiring salary for this position starts at $17.46/hr. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

    Qualifications

    Required Education and Experience
    High school diploma/GED
    Front-line customer service experience (e.g. retail, food service, or hospitality)

    Required Skills and Knowledge
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Proficiency using computer technology
    • Ability to quickly grasp and use new concepts
    • Attention to detail
    • Flexibility in scheduling
    • Willingness to adjust to a constantly changing work environment
    • Physical activities and demands
    Preferred Skills and Knowledge
    • Interest in and knowledge of the history of the Lower Cape Fear Region
    • Ability to help patrons/customers with complex research queries
    • Experience working with fragile collections
    Physical activities and demands:
    • Spends up to several hours a day in a stationary position to assist customers
    • Frequently moves and positions bins of books that weigh up to 30 pounds
    • Frequently transports large numbers of books to various locations in the building
    • Positions, places, and removes books and other library materials around, onto, and from shelves at a wide range of heights
    • Communicates and exchanges information and ideas with customers and coworkers throughout the workday
    • Operates a computer, cash register, and other electronic devices throughout the day
