    Job Description


    The Director of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety is an inspiring leader who provides strategic, operational, and thoughtful leadership to support The University of Toledo Medical Center's mission to improve the human condition by providing patient-centered, university-quality care.

    The Director works collaboratively with the Chief Medical Officer, senior leadership, clinical department chairs, risk management, nursing, pharmacy, and administrative leadership to develop and implement a best-in-class quality and safety program for UTMC and ensures regulatory compliance and accreditation.

    The candidate will contribute to the instructional mission of the university by teaching courses in quality and patient safety.

    Specific job duties and responsibilities include:

    • Collaborate with UTMC and physician group leaders to envision, develop, and implement the organization's quality and patient safety plan.
    • Oversee the operations of the Quality Management Department including staff and budget.
    • Direct supervision of department staff. Responsible for planning, evaluating and justifying needs for staff positions; also responsible for interviewing and orienting new employees. Responsible for recruitment and orientation of all new department members.
    • Utilize time management in a cost-effective, efficient manner.
    • Organize and staff UTMC and Board Quality Committees and key strategic QI/PS (Quality Improvement/Patient Safety) initiatives.
    • Oversee regulatory readiness, quality measurement, public reporting, and pay-for-performance programs and initiatives, holding staff and departments accountable for achieving performance objectives.
    • Establish quality measurement and improvement activities, including methods to track implementation of action plans following site surveys and critical events reviews.
    • Coordinate root cause analysis cases with Chief Medical Officer
    • Review or assure review of mortality cases.
    • Lead task forces to improve metrics identified in the quality plan.
    • Oversee reporting and communication of quality improvement initiatives, quality and patient safety awareness, safety culture survey administration, and recognition programs.
    • Organize, coordinate, and analyze UPL program (OHIO Invests in Priority Populations J details including creation of annual goals, objectives and measurable metrics used to achieve outcomes. Track program progress formally and report status to leadership and program stakeholders. Works closely with relevant stakeholders on the UTP Value Based Care team to ensure strategic alignment across programs and facilitate initiative implementation.
    • Educate clinicians, trainees, and other staff on quality and patient safety concept.
    • Participate in root cause analyses and failure modes and effects analyses and debriefings.
    • Coordinate closely with the Central Verification Office and Health Information Management Department to achieve organizational goals and objectives.
    • Coordinate reporting to external agencies of quality data and assure accuracy of data provided.
    • Promote a culture of safety, high-reliability, patient and staff engagement, and performance excellence.
    • Develop, evaluate, and maintain quality dashboards and performance metrics.
    • Support and mentor Department employees and other staff, students, and trainees with an interest in quality and patient safety
    • Maintain current competency and expertise in quality and patient safety.
    • Facilitate, develop, and implement special projects as assigned by the CMO.
    • Review safety events and assure timely completion of safety analysis.
    • Co-chairs the Health Equity taskforce with Senior administration to plan, develop, and monitor progress o health equity standards set by CMS and joint commission.
    • Staff Development and Teaching duties:
    • Collaborate with Nursing Leadership regarding educational needs of staff and orientation.
    • Provide leadership for the development of online education, simulation labs, and continuing education programs.
    • Teach patient safety content online and/or face to face to healthcare professions including College of Nursing students, medical residents, College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and/or College of Medicine students during experiential or didactic coursework.
    • Teach safety and quality concepts to all hospital stakeholders including but not limited to staff nurses, physicians, advanced practice practitioners, and other staff including managers and directors.
    Requirements


    • Master's degree in Quality Management, Health Administration or closely related field;
    • Minimum of 5 years of relevant acute-care hospital experience in quality, patient safety, regulatory and accreditation, or performance improvement; and
    • Demonstrated knowledge in Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act).
