The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc.

(The ILC) of Malden, MA, is a not-for-profit organization that helps immigrants and refugees become successful workers, parents, and community members through direct service programs and public education.

Our direct service program provides free year-round English classes to immigrant and refugee adults in Greater Boston.

We have one in-person, full-time, Citizenship Instructor position open for July 8, 2024.

The position involves teaching two in-person citizenship classes as well as managing students and volunteers in the online citizenship program.

The online program is facilitated by a committed team of volunteers who have completed a comprehensive citizenship curriculum designed by the former instructor.

They engage with students both during scheduled class sessions and outside of regular hours.

As the lead Citizenship Instructor, your primary duties for the online program will include addressing inquiries, maintaining attendance records, and reviewing the weekly reports submitted by the volunteers.

Schedule:


  • Start date: July 8, 202
  • Fulltime: 40 hours per week
  • Morning classes are Monday
  • Friday, 9:00 11:30 am
  • Afternoon classes are every Wednesday, 12:00 3:00 pm
  • Teacher meetings are most Friday afternoons from 12:00 2:00 pm
  • Classes meet approximately 44 weeks per year
  • One professional development week takes place outside of class weeks

Responsibilities:


  • Instruct learners in basic U.S. history and government; prepare students in all aspects of citizenship interview preparation
  • Prepare lesson plans for volunteers, as needed
  • Communicate with volunteers of the online citizenship program
  • Assess and accommodate students as needed
  • Refer students for counseling when appropriate
  • Document unit and lesson plans
  • Complete required paperwork, including attendance, student goals and achievements, assessments, and promotions
  • Communicate classroom/student issues to the program director in a timely manner
  • Participate in staff meetings and other teacher/program meetings as scheduled
  • Participate in program development
  • Set and document professional development goals
  • Help with other duties as assigned by the director

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree
  • Teaching certificate or experience working with the adult immigrant population
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Proficient digital/internet skills
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles and materials to meet individual needs of students
  • Ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong organizational, communication, and management skills
