As a Lead Landscape Gardener, you will carry out our Mission of Love by coordinating with the Landscape Supervisors to plan, design and implement annual bulb and small area plantings, work schedules and projects to manage and maintain various areas of the campus. Shares responsibility in observing, reporting and resolving campus landscape needs and hazards. Campus areas include, but are not limited to resident cottages, apartments, administrative buildings, public space and gardens, farm and orchard acreage and woodlands within campus boundaries.

Our Lead Landscape Gardener is responsible for the following:

  • Assists the Landscape Supervisor in planning, coordinating and performing any landscape management practices necessary to maintain the campus such as the care of lawns and gardens using a variety of hand tools, including rakes, saws, shovels, trimmers and pruning saws. Understands basic horticultural practices and general best management practices.
  • Leads and directs full time and seasonal workers in daily and weekly activities concerning the proper maintenance of the grounds. Capable of assessing, evaluating and correcting plant growth, minor grading and drainage issues. Managing general cleaning and care of walks, exterior furnishings, and architectural elements, in coordination with the Landscape Supervisor.
  • Keeps landscape beds and plant material attractive and healthy through pruning, trimming, weeding, mulching and other horticultural interventions.
  • Maintains lawns with the use of mowers, string trimmers, edgers, aeration, over seeding and fertilizing to keep it healthy and at an optimal height.
  • Plants new lawn, annuals, perennials, bulbs and shrubs following planned designs as prescribed by the Landscape Supervisor.
  • Waters lawns and plants when needed to maintain the health of the lawns and plants.
  • Performs all aspects of snow operations on campus by plowing, equipment operations, salting and shoveling during winter weather conditions including off hours callin.
  • Maintains work areas and vehicles in an orderly and clean manner, maintaining a safe work place. Performs all tasks and operates all equipment in a safe manner as outlined in operating manuals. Ensures the proper care and use of tools, equipment and supplies and uses proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Completes computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) generated work orders and provides clear documentation of work as required. Generates work orders for additional work or tasks identified in the field and completes or submits them as appropriate and maintains an accurate record of time for cost distribution and payroll.

What You Have:


  • A high school graduate or equivalent. Secondary education and/or field related certifications preferred.
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver's license
  • Minimum of twoyear training in horticulture, either technical or onthejob is desirable.
  • Possess or the ability to acquire a PA state pesticide applicator's certification within 1 year.
  • Knowledge of herbaceous and woody plant material desirable.
  • Good written, oral, organizational and computer skills.
