Introduction:


Under direct oversight from Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II or III, the W/WW Treatment Plant Apprentice performs a variety of skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the City's water or wastewater treatment plant equipment and processes.


  • Please note:
  • There are two positions available; one in Water Treatment and one in Wastewater Treatment.
  • This position will be required to work various shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Starting salary is $20.18/hour

Incremental increases based on strict performance goals outlined within the Apprenticeship program:

  • Approximately 6 months from hire date increase to $20.90/hour
  • Approximately 12 months from hire date increase to $21.94/hour
  • Approximately 18 months from hire date increase to $23.90/hour

Minimum Qualifications:


Education and Experience:


  • No experience required for this position.
  • A High School diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
  • Satisfactory completion (C or above) in two or more of the following areas: science, biology, chemistry, or related field at the high school or college level from an accredited educational institution.
  • Satisfactory completion (C or above) of MAT 102 and ENG 101 or higher at the high school or college level administered by an accredited educational institution.

Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements:


All Assignments:


  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that outofstate driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
  • This position requires satisfactory results of a preemployment drug screen and a preemployment medical exam that includes an audiogram and vision test, and depending on assignment, a pulmonary/respiratory exam.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
  • Must meet the following conditions within 24 months as written within an approved performance plan:
  • Obtain a Grade 2 in Water Treatment or Wastewater Treatment from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ).
  • Obtain Wastewater or Water Treatment Plant Operation Specialist Certification from California State University Sacramento Office of Water Programs.
  • Complete 40hour HAZWOPER training.
  • Complete CPR/AED training.
  • Complete all necessary safety training as written in performance plan or assigned.
  • Complete 2,000 hours of on the job contact training hours as specifically detailed in assigned Performance Plan.
  • Must maintain performance level achieving all performance expectations as outlined to remain within the Apprenticeship Program and be eligible for assignment to the position of a Water or Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II.

Water Assignment:


  • Must obtain a Grade I operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the discipline of Water Treatment within 12 months of hire or promotion.

Wastewater Assignment:


  • Must obtain a Grade I operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within the discipline of Wastewater Treatment within 12 months of hire or promotion.

Essential Functions:


  • Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area within a Division which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:_
  • Maintains and operates plant equipment and processes related to water or wastewater treatment systems on an assigned shift. Prioritizes activities between the different treatment processes and systems, including the operation of valves, gates, pumps and machinery manually, locally in automatic mode or remote via computerized control strategy.
  • Samples and analyzes influents/effluents, source water/product water, feed water and permeate to detect quality variations, interpret laboratory results, reading sheets, process tests, computerized data and information trends to identify variations in flow and water quality and make appropriate changes.
