Description

Under general supervision, the Tree Trimmer and Pruner is Responsible for cutting down, pruning, or trimming branches, leaves, and roots from trees to prevent damage and destruction or for aesthetic purposes.

This position requires a team approach to ensure maintenance work meets golf course objectives, is respectful of site resources, meets accessibility requirements and addresses visitor safety.


Duties and Responsibilities include:
Cut away dead, obstructive, or excess branches from trees and shrubbery, using chain saws and work crews.

Climb trees with safety devices to properly cut down limbs. At times, this includes using lifts and power tools to gain access to high areas.

Prune or treat trees or shrubs using handsaws, pruning hooks, sheers, and clippers.

Remove debris and cart away large limbs for disposal.

Clear debris by using shovels and rakes.

Provide guidance to other staff assisting in tree trimming.

Clear sites, streets, and grounds of woody and herbaceous materials, such as tree stumps and fallen trees and limbs.

Spray and treat diseased trees.

Reshape trees to create aesthetically pleasing shapes.

Water and fertilize trees.

Strip bark from trees.

Clean, sharpen and lubricate tools and equipment.

Clean maintenance area and equipment
May assist with golf course maintenance activities.

Report any conditions or challenges that need attention to the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent.

Conform with all safety rules and use all appropriate safety equipment.

Performs all other related duties, as assigned.


Education and Experience Required
High School Degree/GED required. Specialized training in tree maintenance or a related field is desirable. Plus, minimum two years of increasingly responsible tree maintenance, including tree climbing. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.


Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:
Practices, methods, and materials used in planting, pruning and removing trees.
Tools, material and equipment needed to maintain trees.
Forestry practices including tree identification.
Common tree diseases and pests and their treatment.
Climbing practices and safety procedures.
Safe use of hazardous chemicals, herbicides and fertilizers.
Operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment used in caring for trees.
Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time in unfavorable weather conditions.
Perform heavy manual labor.
Trim, prune and remove all types and sizes of trees utilizing appropriate equipment.
Identify and treat common tree diseases.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Keep accurate records of daily activities.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Ability to work independently and in a group.


Computer Skills

Required:
Ability to use employee self-service on companys human resources/payroll database.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:


Required:
Must have and maintain a valid Arizona Drivers License, maintain automobile insurance coverage and have access to an automobile.


Other
Ability to work schedule required to fulfill duties of position.

At times, individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to handle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands and to seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.

Must seek approval from supervisor before incurring overtime, Be available to work weekends, stand-by and emergency call-ins.

Prolonged periods climbing and standing on ladders and raised platforms at extreme heights.
Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds for extended periods of time.
Must be able to push or pull up to 70 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, ability to adjust focus, and manual dexterity in combination with eye/hand coordination.

Work with and around heavy equipment, power tools and pesticides; work at heights on aerial equipment (including ropes/saddles) and ladders
Work on slippery and uneven surfaces.
Work around people and automobile traffic.
Exposure to noise, dust, heat and inclement weather conditions.
