    DutiesThe Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is looking for temporary employees to work as Motor Vehicle Operators in Fairbanks, AK.A Motor Vehicle Operator (WG-08) operates vehicles safely and efficiently over all types of roads in rural and urban settings.

    Responsible for vehicle security.

    Vehicles operated include, but are not limited to:
    passenger cars, pickup trucks, vans, stake bed and box trucks to 33,000 pounds to GVWR water and fuel tankers to 37,000 pounds GVWR, and forklifts


    Other vehicles may include:

    passenger buses and tractor trailer combination coupled by fifth wheel with lowboy to 100,000 pounds GVWR, semitrailer (flatbed and van) up to 53 feet in length and double semitrailer combinations up to 90 feet in length.

    Responsible for pre-trip vehicle checks, keys, logbooks, accessory equipment, radios, cargo, and passengers. Completes vehicle reports, manifest, and performs vehicle inspections. Loads and unloads cargo by hand and forklift. Ensures cargo is appropriately secured. Safely transports various types of hazardous materials. Completes safety and operator preventive maintenance inspections.

    SELECTIVE SERVICE:

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS:
    Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.

    DRUG TESTING:
    Positions require a mandatory pre-employment drug test. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received. The drug test will be provided at Government direction and expense. Once hired, employees are also subject to random drug testing during employment. This is in accordance with Executive Order 12564 and under the Department's Drug Free Workplace Program.
    Positions may require a valid state driver's license.
    CDL Requirement.
    You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of appointment.

    Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications.

    Screen-out Element:
    Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. This must be verifiable on your application.

    To qualify for Motor Vehicle Operator WG-08, you must have experience driving a diesel truck (60,000-80,000 GVW) over the highway with some experience driving in off road or unimproved road situations where the supervisor was available to set and routinely monitor standards of operation and correct deficiencies.


    Selective Placement Factor:

    Must possess a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with endorsements for hazardous materials, tank truck and largest size passenger vehicles.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

    Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates.

    Physical Demands:
    Work involves reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Frequently lifts, moves, or carries items weighing up to 150 pounds while handling cargo.

    Makes couplings between vehicle and towed equipment and secures cargo with chains, binders and straps requiring moderate physical effort in that chains, bars, hooks, etc.

    Work Environment:

    The MVO is required to work outside and is exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading cargo and while performing vehicle inspections and maintenance.

    May be exposed to loud noises from trucks, helicopters and other aircraft.

    Drives in different types of traffic and weather conditions including heavy smoke and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents while driving, or when loading and unloading vehicles.

    The MVO is subject to cuts, bruises, sprains, or broken bones as a result of accidents while driving, or when loading and unloading vehicles.

    Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) i.e. gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety toe boots, etc. is required.
    EducationThere is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

    After separating from federal employment, employees will be offered to continue participation in FEHB under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.
