JOB SUMMARY:
The Shelter Assistant provides day & afternoon, ( or you can choose to pick up other open overnight) coverage including weekends and some holidays at Family Promise of Washington County.
Shelter Assistants insure a safe, secure, comfortable, and supportive shelter environment in a manner consistent with the philosophy, policies, and procedures of the program and agency.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Orient new shelter guests to the facility. Assist with practical needs and create a comfortable living environment.
- Support the Case Manager and Operations Manager in working with clients to help them focus on the primary goal of securing their own housing.
- Promote activities to increase competence with independent living skills.
- Provide conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and supportive counseling as needed.
- Monitor social group activities, assist with volunteerlead activities and other special events.
- Answer telephone and respond to telephone inquiries. Provide resources and referrals for the Housing Hotline of Washington County.
- Monitor building security by checking that guests are safe and in their designated areas, appropriate doors are locked, and reviewing the security cameras throughout the shift.
- Complete cleaning and maintenance duties and shift specific support services.
- Supervise/assist clients in chore activities as needed.
- Provide coverage on rotation with other team members.
- Attend mandatory staff meetings and all required training sessions.
Qualifications
- Preferred, but not a must: A minimum of one year of social work or human service experience working with one or more of the following: individuals experiencing homelessness, mental health related issues, substance abuse, domestic violence, and with those living in poverty.
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED required; Associates in Human Services or Bachelor's Degree in Social Work preferred.
- Excellent, verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational skills
- Confidence in handling confidential records.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to sit for long periods of time and work on a computer.
- Must be able to work on you feet.
- Must remain awake at all times.
- Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Must be able to think clearly and concisely.
