The Security Manager plans, directs, and coordinates activities related to the protection, safeguarding, and security of staff, guests, animals, and others.

They ensure established goals and objectives are accomplished according to priority level, time limitations, and fiscal responsibilities.

The Security Manager designs, implements, and monitors security policies, procedures, and programs while complying with federal, state, and local legal regulations and exercising independent judgment in carrying out all responsibilities.

Responsibilities:


  • Formulates strategies and solutions for longterm sustainable and shortterm improvement. Proactively identifies where, when, and how these different strategies are utilized based on performance.
  • Directs and administers security operations promoting safe work practice promotion, OSHA compliance, safety incentive programs and classes, systems use and management, lost and found, budgeting and forecasting, department management, adherence to federal, state and local standards and meeting participation and facilitation.
  • Develop and manage security policies, procedures, recommendations, and standards to ensure compliance with applicable security laws, regulations, and privacy legislation.
  • Develop and maintain strong and effective partnerships with public law enforcement, parks and fire departments, and other emergency agencies. Assist with plans and investigations as requested.
  • Supervise and execute all incidents involving 911 calls, crisis management plans, and crisis management drills, as well as zoo emergency response plans.
  • Plan, examine, and analyze zoo security operations, including company assets/equipment, animal welfare, guest engagement, and staff safety.
  • Direct, coordinate, and oversee all security activities to assist during peak attendance, special events, etc.
  • Establish, conduct, and/or oversee periodic security inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Proactively address noncompliant situations by collaboratively working with department managers and staff to develop timely solutions.
  • Assess and trend security performance through leading indicators, data review, incident history, and audits. Drive necessary behavioral or environmental changes creatively, efficiently, and costeffectively.
  • Assist with guestrelated security issues. Partner with various business units to target improvements and reduce/manage risks effectively.
  • Inform and advise on local, global, and industry issues and security best practices that can impact business performance.
  • Develop security plans, procedures, and programs in alignment with the zoo's mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives.
  • Understand processes that help develop preventative security programs.
  • Identify and resolve securityrelated problems.
  • Review financial reports to ensure security operation efficiency and quality control.
  • Perform audits of securityrelated performance and conduct physical surveys of premise security, including security equipment and its condition.
  • Conducts routine security audits, risk assessments, and investigations to proactively identify and address any breaches or incidents.
  • Conduct, supervise, and prepare reports relating to internal investigations of losses or violations of zoo policies and procedures.
  • Manage/drive security projects.
  • Work with the training and development manager to implement and manage security training.
  • Possess broad knowledge of zoowide animal facilities and SOPs.
  • Assist in the preparation of emergency management and contingency planning.
  • Manage and direct the selection, training, development, appraisal, and work assignments of personnel.
  • Contributes to saving animals in the wild through: reduction of waste, water and energy use and inspiring guests and staff to take wildlife protecting actions
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

  • Degree in law enforcement/security, business administration or related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years management experience in security or risk management or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent guest service and problemsolving skills
  • Skilled in ability to remain calm in unpredictable situations and deescalate aggressive behaviors
  • Ability to work and build trusted relationships with diverse groups and individuals
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, planning and organizational skills
