A Glimpse of Africa (AGOA) was founded in 2019 to unite people to showcase, educate, celebrate, and share diverse African cultures while fostering community programs that voice, advocate for, and address African refugees and immigrants' needs and disparities.

A Glimpse of Africa's mission is to ensure that African immigrants and refugees are visible through advocacy, creating a sense of belonging, and breaking language, cultural, and systemic barriers.

Based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, our nonprofit believes these essential needs, resources, and opportunities are key to a thriving life as refugees and immigrants plant roots in West Michigan.

To support our growing team, we are seeking a detail-oriented, dynamic, and enthusiastic Communication & Events Assistant to support our community outreach and programs.

What You'll Do:


As the Communication & Events Assistant, you'll play an instrumental part in ensuring the success of our annual A Glimpse of Africa Festival, Gala, and community programs by coordinating event logistics, marketing, and communications.

You'll collaborate with the Events Manager to implement marketing campaigns and fundraising strategies that raise awareness and engagement for AGOA's community events.

This full-time position offers a unique opportunity to make an impact and contribute to a vibrant cultural celebration of African immigrant and refugee communities.


In this role, you'll:

  • Use your previous experience in event planning and management and passion for highlighting African immigrant and refugee traditions to collaborate onsite with the AGOA Management Team to plan and successfully execute the largest African Cultural Festival in West Michigan, our annual Gala, our Mental Health Fair, and so much more.
  • Use your fundraising and interpersonal skills to develop and maintain donor relationships. You'll coordinate meetings with potential funders and AGOA's leadership team and deliver our appreciation and gratitude for our giving community through your heartfelt communications. You will highlight and integrate sponsorship contributions and opportunities within social media and event promotional materials.
  • Pour your love for cultural and community festivities into coordinating all festival administration and ensuring our volunteer recruitment efforts are successful, enabling our organization to showcase rich African cultures through music, dance, fashion, arts and crafts, and other community activities at our events.
  • Create relationships with our volunteers, using your volunteer management experience and eventplanning skills to ensure we create a positive and memorable volunteer experience, aiming for longterm commitment from our volunteers.
  • Be the chat communications champ, maintaining lively conversations and connections within our WhatsApp groups, all while following the rules with flair Bring uplifting energy to our team meetings by sharing exciting project updates that'll keep everyone on the team informed
