POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Library of the University of California, Santa Barbara, seeks an innovative, forward-looking, service-oriented, and collaborative professional for an exciting opportunity to serve as Collection Strategist Librarian and liaison to the Music department.


DESCRIPTION

RESPONSIBILITIES

COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT

  • Responsible for the development and management of general research collections in Music, Visual and Performing Arts, selected Western language collections such as German and Italian, and other collecting areas in the Humanities and Social Science as assigned. Manages allocated collection funds to ensure their timely and appropriate expenditure. Works closely with vendors and content providers. Establishes and fosters relationships with donors and community members in partnership with the Library's Development officer.
  • Actively collaborates with the Collection Strategies Department on developing new evidencebased methodologies for the acquisition of scholarly resources and content, collection management, and assessment of delivery platforms and across formats (including print, digital, media, data, and other emerging formats).
  • Implements innovative models and approaches to collection development that effectively steward the library's investment in general collections. Contributes to the departmental budget planning and funding allocations for the library's collections and content based on quantitative and qualitative assessment strategies informing allocation of the library's collections budget.
  • Collaborates with library staff in technical services and other library units on developing consistent access, discovery, and stewardship methodologies for general collections across their lifecycle.
  • Evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for redirecting the library's investment in collections toward resources with the greatest potential for transforming the system of scholarly communication and open dissemination of research. Monitors local, systemwide, and vendorprovided reports to identify collectionrelated trends and patterns.
  • Facilitates opportunities for faculty and students to share their scholarship and learning via the Library. Participates in scholarly communication outreach, education, and advocacy, including maintaining an understanding of UC's open access policies and the systems and resources that support them (e.g., eScholarship, Elements/UC Publication Management System). Evaluates opportunities and makes recommendations for redirecting the library's investment in collections to resources with the greatest potential for transforming the system of scholarly communication toward open dissemination of research.
  • Represents UCSB on systemwide committees and adhoc groups related to collections initiatives. Participates in professional development activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT AND INSTRUCTION

  • Engages in proactive outreach and communications with the Music Department to maintain awareness of academic programs and priorities, curricular developments, accreditation cycles, research methodologies, and faculty and graduate student research and teaching. Promotes the library's collections, services, and spaces and seeks feedback to increase their effectiveness.
  • Provides research consultations in person and virtually to faculty and students engaged in traditional and emerging research practices within the Music Department. Works collaboratively with the Library's Research Data Services Program and DREAM Lab to support dataintensive research and digital scholarship. Supports undergraduate students involved in sustained research projects. Promotes disciplinary resources (collections, databases, primary source material) through the creation of online guides or digital or physical exhibitions. Serves on disciplinary teams with functional experts throughout the library to collaboratively support faculty and students in the humanities and social sciences. Contributes to the assessment of the Library's Academic Engagement Program.
