    Strom Minnesota is currently looking for an experienced Swiss Machinist for our client in the E. Metro. Any experience with Tsugami Swiss Machines a big plus.

    Swiss Machinist

    General Overview

    The Swiss Machinist sets up, operates, and tends Swiss machines to pierce, cut, and drill or otherwise shape or cut metal or plastic materials, such as wire, rod, or bar stock. The Swiss Machinist controls machines and processes; inspects equipment, structures or material; reads work orders and blueprints; evaluates work order information to determine completeness and takes initiative to seek additional information as needed; determines the most effective and efficient method, approach and tools to complete the work; handles/moves materials, tools and equipment; troubleshoots issues; and ensures that completed work meets required specifications. This work requires a high degree of attention to detail and precision, as the Swiss Machinist is responsible for maximizing set up efficiency and machine run time, minimizing machine downtime, and crafting high quality finished parts that meet or exceed industry expectations. The Swiss Machinist is also responsible for ongoing learning and sharing knowledge and expertise with co-workers.

    Responsibilities

    1. Study blueprints and job routers for information on specifications, materials, and tooling to determine requirements to efficiently set up new jobs.

    2. Select proper cutting tools using knowledge of material properties and tool availability.

    3. Position, secure, and set up tools in tool holders on machines and verify their positions.

    4. Program/operate controls to set cutting speeds, depths, and feed rates.

    5. Inspect set up parts to verify conformance with specifications and send sample workpieces to inspection to ensure in-process quality control sampling requirements are met, as indicated on router.

    6. Monitor processes, materials and operations and if needed, adjust machine controls and change tool settings to keep dimensions within specified tolerances.

    7. Clean and prepare parts for finishing and shipping to meet internal standards and as indicated on print or job router.

    8. Meet or exceed job order expectations (set up, cycle time, total hours).

    9. Update company information on work routers to improve re-order efficiency.

    10. Keep equipment and work area clean and orderly and perform preventative maintenance functions on equipment and tools

    11. Suggest and implement improvements.

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, & Education/Experience

    Knowledge

    · Print reading, geometric dimension and tolerance system

    · Mathematics: adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, geometry, algebra, trigonometry

    · CNC machines: designs, uses, capabilities, limitations, and maintenance

    · Tools: specific capabilities and limitations; step-overs; tool paths

    · Tool holders and part fixturing (center finders, edge finders, probes)

    · Boring bars, fixtures, inserts and other accessories used on various machines

    · Measuring devices: calipers, micrometers, others

    · Material: properties/cutting dynamics, including proper speeds and feeds

    · Post work processing and finishing, including effects of post-processing and finishing operations

    · Shop operations/systems: material stock and labeling, shipping prep, chip management, waste handling

    · Standard operating procedures; safety protocols and practices

    Skills

    · Calculate dimensions or tolerances, including allowances for coatings or plating, when needed

    · Use/interpret computer aided manufacturing software (CAM/CAD) and programming language (G-Code)

    · Use/interpret CNC controls

    · Read/interpret blue prints

    · Operate computers and effectively manage files

    · Monitor and control operations

    · Perform quality control: test and inspect parts using instruments such as micrometers or calipers

    Abilities

    · Utilize three-dimensional thinking/spatial orientation skills to visualize and conceive most efficient and effective process for making parts

    · Cross-check actual standard operating procedures against written orders

    · Exercise problem sensitivity: anticipate when something is wrong or likely to go wrong

    · Focus: maintain concentration on a task over time with attention to detail and accuracy

    Education/Experience

    This work requires a high school diploma and quality, fully involved job shadowing with an expert and/or previous work experience with a range of machines, materials, and machining practices, including process development, programming, and machining. A relevant two-year trade school diploma is a plus.
