- Facilitate and guide decisions related to materials & COTS part selections
- Actively participate in/lead design review meetings
- Facilitate team management functions such as work intake, estimation, and project tracking
- Support research engineering programs with regard to mechanical systems, test assemblies, and other program support equipment
- Collaborate with R&D engineers, engineering support specialists, and senior personnel; by participating in meetings, offering design, material & component recommendations, and assisting in resolution of system design issues may include
- Initiate/direct Design Review meetings
- Create concepts, designs, and 3D models of complex mechanical and electrical systems; including the integration and packaging of components/assemblies into overall system assembly models
- Adhere to accepted standards, methods, and techniques, while considering ease of manufacturing and ease of assembly in order to produce functional and cost-effective designs
- Create complex design documentation packages; including all documentation required to quote and manufacture fabrication parts/assemblies, while using accepted standards, methods, and techniques
- Ensure proper design intent, fitment/tolerance analysis, and suitability of the design for the intended application, with a focus on proper GD&T application per ASME Y14.5
- Maintain all required compliance training by ARL and related to business systems, safety, and security
- Training of others in the performance of MEDD methods and processes and the correct application of each
- Direct supervisory responsibility for junior personnel, including day-to-day supervision, time keeping, and annual performance reviews
- Mentoring junior personal, by providing checks of their work, directing their efforts, and helping to organize/plan their workloads
- Familiarity with and experience in the design of complex mechanical systems
- Knowledge of and experience using 3D modeling software
- Knowledge of and experience using Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software
- Superior knowledge of industry standards (particularly ASME Y14.5)
- General knowledge of commonly used materials and finishes for mechanical systems designed for undersea applications
- Experience in mentoring other designers and leading design teams including organizing and managing the allocation of work as well as tracking and reporting on progress
- Experience in leading or facilitating mechanical design reviews
- Past success as the formal supervisor of other staff members
- Siemens NX 3D modeling software
- Siemens Teamcenter PLM software
- Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
- Knowledge of MEDD Service Center standards
- Active government security clearance at the SECRET level

We are searching for an Engineering Technologist to join our Mechanical and Electrical Design and Drafting (MEDD) Service Center at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL's purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).
