NATURE OF WORK:


This is highly skilled work involving heavy equipment operation and the use of a road grader, backhoe, and other heavy construction equipment as a major portion of the work.

The work requires that employees spend a large portion of their time operating road graders and other heavy construction equipment with exacting skill such as cutting, spreading, and leveling narrow alleys, while being alert for obstacles such as overhanging wires, fences, tree limbs and shrubs, or pedestrians, requiring employees to be alert to avoid accidents or personal injuries.

Employees can also be assigned to operate other heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, multi-purpose trackless vehicle, skid steer loader or backhoe on a project where considerable skill is required.

Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher classification to gain experience and training in preparations for advancement.

Maintenance tasks of a semi-skilled or unskilled nature are performed when not operating equipment. Safety equipment such as hard hats, safety glasses, reflective vests, gloves, earplugs, and steel-toed boots or shoes is required.

This position requires 24/7; 365-day availability and coverage of scheduled and unscheduled overtime for emergencies, snow and ice control, and special projects.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
(Specific assignment will include some or all of the following):

  • Performs pre/post trip inspections according to D.O.T. standards. (All Equipment).
  • Performs daily equipment inspections and ensures all tools and equipment are properly functioning; assists in repairs and replacements of equipment as needed.
  • Checks the condition of alleys and other surfaces to determine the extent and amount of grading and gravel required and identifies any obstacles.
  • Operates a road grader to grade the alley's surface and other surfaces while maneuvering safely in narrow, confined spaces.
  • Operates other heavy equipment such as frontend loader, skidsteer or backhoe on assignments requiring a high degree of skill.
  • Checks the condition of equipment periodically and performs preventative maintenance as required.
  • Operates hand and power/pneumatic tools and motorized equipment common to public works maintenance work.
  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks such as: making simple adjustments, replacing minor parts, and lubricating equipment.
  • Operates a dump truck or other equipment to plow snow and spread salt and other deicing materials.
  • This position may be assigned to the night shift to support snow and ice operations and emergency situations during the snow season as determined by management.
  • Safely operates medium to large trucks while pulling short/long trailers up to 10K pds and rigging the equipment to the trailer following the rules and regulations on proper rigging techniques.
  • Drives and operates dump trucks with snowplow and spreader, front end loader, grader, or other equipment to remove snow and ice or to haul construction materials as needed or assigned.
  • Operates and maintains salt brine maker, produces salt brine, and properly stores it.
  • Inventories, stores, and maintains multiple deicing materials, and inspects and operates all snow and ice equipment.
  • Determines and performs proper setup and take down of temporary traffic control for construction and special events per the MUTCD.
  • Serves as lead worker throughout various types of installation and repair projects.
  • May occasionally collect solid waste and perform general laborer tasks within the city's right of way, facilities, parks, and parking lots.
  • Reviews, evaluates, and prioritizes external requests/complaints by performing field inspections and responding through 311 software and other lines of communication.
  • Assists in keeping records of work performed using an asset management software program, along with labor, materials, supplies, and equipment used.
  • Maintains proper inventory levels of materials and informs Crew Leader and Supervisor when inventory is low.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:


  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess three (3) or more years of related work experience in maintenance and the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Must possess a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement and a safe driving record and must be able to maintain it as a condition of employment.
  • Must be willing and able to maintain all OSHArequired certifications as a condition of employment.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain an IDO
