Position Overview


The Director of Lower School at Saint Patrick Catholic School, an independent Catholic located in Norfolk, VA, with a coed student body for grades Pre K to 8, oversees all aspects of the educational, administrative, and pastoral care functions for pre-kindergarten through fourth grade students.

This leadership role requires a commitment to the school's mission and values, fostering a nurturing and academically rigorous environment within the framework of Catholic teachings.

The Director of Lower School supervises 27 faculty and staff members and approximately 240 students; this position reports to the Director of Studies as a leadership team member.

Founded in 2005, Saint Patrick Catholic School (Norfolk, Virginia) is an independent Catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students in grades pre-kindergarten through eight.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Leadership:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive curriculum that aligns with Catholic educational principles, fostering academic excellence and holistic development.
  • Provide guidance and support to faculty in curriculum development, instructional strategies, and assessment practices to ensure student achievement and growth.
  • Monitor student progress through data analysis and assessment results, implementing interventions as needed to support individual student needs.
  • Teach or coteach a minimum of one lesson a quarter

Faculty and Staff Development:

  • Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate lower school faculty and staff in collaboration with the Director of Studies and Head of School, fostering a collaborative and professional working environment.
  • Provide ongoing professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to enhance teaching skills, foster a positive classroom community, promote spiritual growth, and maintain awareness of best practices in education.
  • Conduct regular observations and provide constructive feedback to support teacher growth and effectiveness in the classroom.

Student Life and Pastoral Care:

  • Cultivate a nurturing and inclusive school culture grounded in Catholic values, promoting students' spiritual, social, and emotional wellbeing.
  • Oversee the implementation of programs and initiatives to support students' spiritual formation, character development, socialemotional learning, and a safe and effective learning environment.
  • Collaborate with counselors, chaplains, and other support staff to address student needs and provide pastoral care services as necessary.
  • Participate in faith formation experiences.

Family and Community Engagement:

  • Foster positive relationships with parents, guardians, and families through effective communication, collaboration, and involvement in school activities.
  • Organize and lead parent education programs, workshops, and events to promote partnership between home and school in supporting student success.
  • Represent the lower school division within the broader school community, participating in schoolwide committees, events, and initiatives as needed.

Administrative and Operational Oversight:

  • Manage the lower school budget, allocating resources effectively to support academic programs, professional development, and student activities.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant educational regulations, accreditation standards, and policies, maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  • Collaborate with the school administration and leadership team to implement strategic initiatives and advance the school's overall mission and vision.
  • Perform other duties as directed by the Director of Studies and Head of School.
