    AWS GCNA (Global Connectivity and Network Availability) is the backbone that connects the global AWS network.

    Focused on controlling the internet traffic that allows users to access their information and applications regardless of where they are in the world.

    GCNA is responsible for building and designing a complex backbone network that allows internet traffic to flow efficiently between data centers and customers.


    Amazon's network is a key differentiator for Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the global operation of thousands of applications across hundreds of thousands of servers worldwide.

    The AWS Networking team develops and operates the network platform for all of Amazon, including e-commerce products and cloud computing solutions.

    This platform is industry-leading for its efficiency, throughput and reliability, and it is critical to the success of hundreds of thousands of AWS customers.

    As part of this Network Development Manager role, a successful candidate will be responsible for managing one of our global teams aligned with one of our network fabrics.

    Direct reports will include Network Development Engineers who own design and optimization of the future state of the global Amazon network.

    The Topology team is expected to identify optimal and efficient designs to manage traffic flows, failure scenarios and optimal capacity.

    The team is also responsible for deep-dive and root-cause analysis of events which impact our customers ensuring that we improve our processes and designs in order to avoid customer impact in the future.

    AWS leaders are highly-technical and understand their environment to accurately represent operational issues and exercise high judgment during high severity events.

    As the manager of one of our Topology teams, successful candidates will be responsible for setting and delivering on the strategic vision for the team.

    Key job responsibilities
    Operational Excellence
    As a manager within the Networking team you will be expected to drive operational excellence in everything we do. This includes creating sane processes and procedures to improve efficiency in our day-to-day tasks and projects. You will drive standards across the network and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies. You will work closely on supporting our internal customers and ensuring that their needs and issues are being addressed.

    Network Measurement

    As a Network Development Manager, you will be expected to drive quality into the metrics we report to assist us in focusing on the areas that give us the best ROI.

    This includes measurement of our issues, network capacity, vendor equipment/failures analysis and network performance.

    Performance Management/Team Health
    You will own all facets of performance and career management for the team. Regular one-on-one meetings with all team members are required.

    You will be expected to provide both technical and 'soft skill' mentoring in order to maintain a well-rounded, world-class organization.

    This includes project management, quality audits and coordination of training sessions with senior-level engineers as well as day-to-day oversight of the team including scheduling of a 8x7x365 operational rota.

    Incident/Change Management
    You will be integral to developing and improving incident and change management within the Networking space.

    Responsibilities include driving initiatives regarding improvements to existing tools & processes and providing feedback on new practices & procedures in order to scale with the rapid expansion of the Amazon platform and customer base.

    Recruiting and Hiring

    You will take the lead in hiring quality personnel who not only fit the needs of the current organization but also will allow the team to scale with platform and service growth.

    You will coordinate with Amazon and external recruiting staff to evaluate potential candidates, participate in initial phone screens and provide relevant guidance and feedback during on-site interview loops.

    You will also be responsible for ensuring that proper training takes place for all new hires.

    Automation

    You will be heavily involved in driving the team to analyze day to day operations in order to identify new automation opportunities.

    This will include helping our software teams in Networking understand our requirements and drive their roadmaps to ensure that our network engineers are able to directly create new automation tasks directly within those software frameworks rather than relying on other teams to deliver them.

    Goal Setting and Delivery
    You will directly own defining and delivering strategic goals for your team and for the wider Topology team.

    As part of this responsibility, you will be expected to communicate goals to the team, align the necessary resources, and communicate status to the wider leadership team.

    A day in the life

    Engineers in the Backbone Enterprise and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization have a wide range of responsibilities: we work with internal partners to develop and implement the next gen platforms along with the tooling ecosystems to support with these platforms driving efficiency and scalability through the automation of builds, configuration deployment, and the scaling of capacity.

    As our network is one of the largest in the world, there is no blue print at our scale allowing our engineers to develop solutions to the complex challenges that we face daily.

    We encourage durable solutions that look around corners while taking into consideration our customer needs from a cost, performance, and reliability perspective.

    Our team develops tooling that provides the required visibility and control of traffic across the network, while prioritizing the automatic mitigation of events to minimize the impact to our customers during events

    About the team

    Within AWS Networking, the Backbone Enterprise, and Regional Engineering (BERE) organization is responsible for the design, implementation, and operations of a wide array of networking infrastructure that provide global connectivity between all AWS Regions and edge locations.


    BERE provides the massive scale required to support our AWS customers and internal services, via a network that grows by 70% annually.

    In addition, they have teams that are responsible for the design and operation of our global corporate office and data center network, allowing tens of thousands of Amazonians to perform their daily tasks in support of our customers.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or relevant degree/experience.
    • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
    • 5+ years people management experience or relevant leadership experience, managing a team of 8+ individual contributors.
    • 3+ years of past experience with network engineering either as a manager or individual contributor.
    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience in developing operational metrics and maintain SLA.
    • Indepth knowledge of Networking (TCP/IP, Routing/Switching & Troubleshooting)
    • Indepth experience in the application of network design, including knowledge of major protocols, topology design, network hardware, device configuration and traffic engineering.
    • Drive effective teamwork, communication, collaboration and commitment across multiple disparate groups with competing priorities.
    • Proven ability to troubleshoot and identify root cause for escalated issues and broad understanding of Incident, Problem, and Change Management practices
    • The ability to think at scale and automate processes/tasks
    • Experience with automating device configuration and generation preferred.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
    • Experience with supporting customers by reviewing their requests and design a robust network to scale that meets their requirements.
