    Description of primary duties and responsibilities:
    Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

    Fayetteville State University is a public, comprehensive Historically Black College and University (FSU), located in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Fayetteville State University, a constituent institution in the University of North Carolina System, is the second oldest public university in North Carolina and is the regional university of choice for students from rural, military, and other diverse backgrounds.     In support of Fayetteville State University's mission, the Department of Criminal Justice, which lies within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, offers a BS in Criminal Justice, a minor in Criminal Justice, an MS in Criminal Justice (with both a thesis and non-thesis option), and a Graduate Certificate in Criminal Justice. The BSCJ includes an online degree completion component, while the MSCJ program is offered online.

    Primary Purpose of the Position:

    The Dudley E. Flood Endowed Distinguished Chair position is a tenure-track, 9-month appointment for an exceptional criminal justice scholar. The Endowed Distinguished Chair is expected to serve as a faculty and student mentor and to raise the visibility, quality, and productivity of scholarship, teaching, and service within the department and the university. Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Endowed Distinguished Chair will exhibit a deep commitment to public higher education, promote FSU's values and goals, and actively engage with the community to foster positive relationships and partnerships. They will also work collaboratively with faculty, department chairs, deans, and staff throughout the university.
    Description of Work Continued:
    The Distinguished Chair must exhibit initiative, enthusiasm, and teamwork in accomplishing the following responsibilities:

    Scholarship -34%:
    Advance knowledge through innovation and research in criminal justice.
    Facilitate the development of research, scholarship, and grantsmanship among criminal justice faculty.
    Promote a program of innovative scholarship to advance the scholarly missions of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the University.
    Collaborate with scholars from other disciplines in a program of funded scientific work.
    Contribute to local, national, and international scholarly communities through collaborations and service activities that promote education and dissemination of information.
    Collaborate with the Fayetteville area's public, nonprofit, private, and industry partners to contribute to the community.

    Lead Program Expansion -33%
    Participate in enhancing the mission and strategic goals of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
    Provide leadership in developing a unified understanding of criminal justice education and the profession that is distinct to the region's needs.
    On behalf of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the University, engage in outreach and partnership activities with criminal justice and associated communities.

    Teaching and mentoring -33%
    Mentor faculty in their career development as scientists, teachers, and scholars.
    Teaching expectations will be 3-6 credit hours per semester.
    Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean and Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
    A doctorate in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Administration of Justice, or a related field
    At least five years of experience in criminal justice education
    Must be appointed at a full professor (Distinguished Professor), or associate professor (Distinguished Scholar) rank and levels, with a preference for full professor.
    A proven record of expertise in grant procurement, research, and scholarship is required for this role. A positive and approachable demeanor, as well as the capability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, is necessary. Strong interpersonal abilities when interacting with professionals in the FSU service area and a deep commitment to preserving and advancing FSU's HBCU legacy, mission.
    Knowledge skills and abilities:
    Knowledge:
    Disciplinary Expertise: In-depth knowledge of current theories, models, and best practices in the field of criminal justice/criminology.
    Educational Technology: Proficiency in using educational technology, digital tools, and online learning platforms to enhance teaching and support student engagement and learning outcomes.

    Skills:
    Research and Scholarship: Strong research skills, including the ability to conduct empirical and longitudinal studies, analyze data, and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and academic conferences.
    Grant writing and proposal development: Ability to write grant proposals to secure funding for research projects.
    Leadership: Effective leadership capabilities to support the Department of Criminal Justice in various capacities, including program expansion.
    Teaching and Instruction: Ability to deliver effective and engaging instruction to criminal justice majors, employing a variety of instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs and to cultivate a collaborative and nurturing learning atmosphere.
    Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey complex concepts clearly and interact with students, colleagues, and community stakeholders effectively.
    Critical Thinking: Capacity to analyze challenges, identify innovative solutions, and make informed decisions on crime and justice-related issues.

    Abilities:
    Training and Professional Development: Ability to design and deliver effective professional development sessions and workshops for criminal justice majors and educators, incorporating evidence-based practices and technology integration.
    Collaboration: Willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues, community partners, and stakeholders to enhance crime and/or justice-associated initiatives, promote community engagement, and advance the goals of FSU's Department of Criminal Justice and College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
    Adaptability: Flexibility to adjust instructional approaches and strategies based on individual student needs and changing educational trends and technologies.
    Commitment to Continuous Learning: A dedication to staying informed about current research, emerging trends, and developments in the discipline of criminal justice/criminology.
    Commitment to Mentorship: A dedication to providing mentorship for both faculty members and students.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    Experience with grant writing and securing external research funding.
    Track record of conference presentations at national or international meetings.
    Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor and guide faculty members and students.
    Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success.
    Experience teaching college-level online courses and/or documented successful training in a college online learning management system (e.g., Blackboard, Canvas).
