New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) is an innovative and interdisciplinary child welfare and social services agency that provides essential support to families with at least one family member who has a disability and/or chronic medical condition. Children and their families enter NAC's services through the city's foster care system, preventive services, or by way of community referral. All our clients have access to a wide array of services including intensive, multi-faceted support for children's educational needs.

As such, NAC is looking for a creative problem solver to join a fun, hardworking team as a Youth Development and Middle Grades Specialist who will support NAC families as an advocate for necessary education and academic supports and as a leader of high-quality groups and programs for young people and their caregivers.

This dynamic role will focus on positive youth development, self-awareness and self-esteem, and peer engagement and tackle school/schooling related matters with an aim to promote self-advocacy and empowerment.

Description of Responsibilities:
  • Primary responsibility is to support and advocate for NAC families appropriate educational and developmental, and programmatic supports and services.
  • Develop and lead groups centered on positive youth development, selfawareness, and engagement with peers.
  • Create specific goals and objectives for youth and family and help "coach" to their fruition.
  • Help guide and organize peerdriven community service projects (some of our young folks are part of a program that includes 20 hours of community service).
  • Be trained in an Evidence-Based Teen (and preteen) Outreach Program (TOP)
  • Management of program or groups logistics including interfacing with venues, partners, and other NAC staff.
  • Liaise with school staff and city agency officials and offices to ensure school/program compliance with federal, state and city laws and regulations.
  • Work with teachers and outside service providers on matters of academic, related services, and socioemotional supports.
  • Participate in NAC case conferences, school visits, IEP meetings, home visits, among other meetings, as necessary.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the education/youth development department and with colleagues from other departments including medical and mental health staff, transportation, and recreation to share best practices and problem solve.
  • Serve as a resource to NAC social workers/case and care managers, as well as, to caregivers and youth in providing technical assistance and guidance with educational matters.
  • Assist with and/or facilitate presentations to staff, and educational workshops.
  • Supervision of interns.
  • Manage caseload data.
  • Prompt submission of progress and case notes.

Required Education and Experience:


  • Master's degree in education, special education, social work, or a related field.
  • Bachelor's degree with 23 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience and or comfort in developing and leading youth programs and groups.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with the New York City public school system, special education rights, and service providers a plus.

Required Skills:


  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Willingness to travel throughout NYC, as needed.
  • Proficiency in Spanish is desirable.
