About the Role:


The RR is responsible for initial intake and responding to and screening heart beating ventilated (HBV) referrals, assessing organ donor suitability, and enhancing the donation process.

The RR is responsible for maintaining donor records, providing donor family support, electronic medical record entry, and communication in conjunction with donor family advocate services.

For potential organ donors, the RR is occasionally responsible for facilitating family conversation regarding donation and obtaining informed consent, in collaboration with the ORC and DFA staff if available.

This includes collaborating with hospital staff to determine appropriate timing for family counseling and conversation.


Clinical Responsibilities
Initial referral intake and response of heart beat ventilated referrals:

Outcome:

The RR staff are responsible for responding to referrals in a prompt, professional manner that facilitates the evaluation of both the donor hospital and DNA.


Assessment:

Uses experience and knowledge to evaluate the referred patients for suitability for organ, tissue, and eye donation in conjunction with the AOC, medical director, transplant centers, and RDSS.


Organ donor suitability:


Outcome:
Identifies all suitable organ donors, obtains clinical status, plan of care, and family information. Ensures that the family is not approached about donation when no potential for donation exists. Ensures that withdrawal of care is not initiated prior to evaluation of donor suitability.

Assessment:

Uses experience and knowledge to evaluate the referred patients for suitability for organ, tissue, and eye donation in conjunction with the AOC, medical director, transplant centers, and RDSS.


Medical and legal requirements:


Outcome:
All medical and legal requirements will be met per hospital, CMS, and OPTN policies prior to organ recovery.

Assessment:
Facilitates brain death testing, ensuring hospital policies are followed.


Family approach and consent:


Outcome:

The RR ensures that the utmost care and support is being given to the potential donor and donor families.

Ensuring the legal decision-maker is approached in an optimal manner to make the donation decision based on complete information provided.


Assessment:

The RR works in conjunction with the AOC, ORC, ODC, DFA, and hospital staff to determine the legal decision-maker.

They evaluate family dynamics and ensure that the legal decision maker is understanding of the potential donor's medical status, terminal condition, and/or impeding neurological or cardiovascular death.

Office responsibilities/miscellaneous:_


  • Attends monthly ORS meetings.
  • Stays up to date on all assigned SOPs and any assigned tasks.
  • Maintains any continuing educations units (CEUs) as applicable.
  • Other duties as assigned by ORS leadership.

Requirements:

Minimum Experience
1-2 years of experience as an EMT-P, LPN, RT, medical scribe, or previous OPO experience
1 year experience with medical terminology

EMT-P, LPN or RT license
Associate or Bachelor's Degree or relevant medical certification

Preferred Experience_
1-2 years of OPO experience
