    LOCATION OF POSITION

    This position will be primarily\r
    located at the Columbia Campus, but applicants must be willing to work at both\r
    the Columbia and Frederick Campuses.��Some\r
    travel between our Columbia and Frederick Campus locations is possible.\r

    Main Purpose of Job

    This position will support students and staff to ensure the development and implementation of a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as the provision of an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. This position will support the provision of a language enriched environment through the use of American Sign Language, printed word and visual supports to meet the varied needs of Deaf students throughout our school birth - 21 with an emphasis on those that need literacy intervention.\r

    This position primarily provides literacy intervention to students through both direct services as well as training and consultation for teachers, and assessment of students reading ability. In addition, provide support to the classroom teachers in utilizing and implementing appropriate reading programs, provide support through team teaching and coaching to classroom teachers to promote effective reading instruction, and provide information to classroom teachers of best known practices in Reading instruction that supports College- and Career-Ready Standards and bilingual education.\r

    This position will ensure equity and unbiased practices are implemented in the classroom and throughout the system of curriculum and instruction.\r

    POSITION DUTIES

    Using data, create and\r
    monitor student reading intervention plans, implement reading services for\r
    elementary, middle and high school students; conduct initial assessments to\r
    determine if students are eligible for services and write reports creating a\r
    reading plan with specific recommendations; coordinate literacy services;\r
    design and write lesson plans specific to student needs for intervention\r
    sessions, provide literacy services to individual students in or out of the\r
    classroom, in small groups or one-on-one with the goal of improving student's\r
    reading, writing, and ASL competencies; provide support to classroom teachers\r
    in implementing literacy strategies including utilizing reading programs\r
    including but not limited to modeling lessons/sessions, coaching and providing\r
    professional development sessions; participate in maintenance of Bilingual\r
    Education concepts and principles throughout the school; improve professional\r
    competence through participation in staff development activities and other\r
    professional growth opportunities; Through collaboration monitor literacy\r
    assessments throughout the school. Serve as a member of the IEP team as\r
    appropriate, write IEP present levels, goals and objectives, track IEP progress\r
    as appropriate.\r

    This position reports to\r
    the Director of Curriculum and Instruction.\r

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:\r
    Bachelor Degree with a minimum of�6�hour\r
    credits from an institution of higher education in reading education including\r
    processes and acquisition of reading skills, methods of teaching reading,\r
    reading assessment, and materials for teaching reading.�In lieu of the 6 credit hours, candidates must have\r
    five years experience of successful classroom instruction in literacy.\r

    \r
    Certification/Licensure:�Current certification/licensure from any\r
    state in either of the following:�Deaf\r
    education,�early childhood education, elementary education,\r
    English, reading teacher, reading specialist or equivalent. Candidates who are\r
    not currently certified/licensed as a reading specialist must be eligible to\r
    apply for�and�be willing to\r
    obtain certification/licensure by the Maryland State Department of Education\r
    with the endorsement of Reading Specialist within a prescribed amount of\r
    time.\r

    \r
    Competencies:�Fluency in American Sign Language and\r
    written English is required.� Knowledge of the Deaf culture, Deaf\r
    education, and ability to teach students on different levels and with varying\r
    educational and language acquisition backgrounds is required.\r
    \r
    \r
    Experience: Knowledge in identifying\r
    and using reading assessment and diagnostic tools is required. Three years of\r
    successful classroom instruction in literacy.\r

    DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Master's Degree in Education of the Deaf, Reading or equivalent of\r
    post-baccalaureate graduate credits in reading education or bilingual pedagogy;\r
    Five years teaching experience, knowledge of the Deaf community,\r
    and�knowledge of ARC Core framework.� Thorough knowledge of bilingual\r
    pedagogy. Other combinations of education, training, and experience which\r
    provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively\r
    in the position may be considered. Reading specialist certification, or\r
    equivalent. Previous experience designing and providing professional\r
    development.\r

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
