Description

The Controls Technician plays a pivotal role in assessing current processes and control mechanisms, optimizing material flow, and enhancing operational efficiency at our service centers.

Collaborating with reliability and leadership units, manage continuous improvement strategies to minimize wastage. Planning, programming, and diagnosing electrical control systems across diverse equipment and machinery. Contributing to the identification and procurement of new equipment by specifying control systems and guiding integration efforts.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate cross functionally with maintenance, operations, and engineering to continuously improve controls systems on various pieces of steel processing equipment.
  • Collect data and perform investigations with the guidance of the engineering and leadership team.
  • Troubleshoot, modify, and upgrade controls systems including equipment operation, safety circuit integration, technology upgrades, and processing line enhancements.
  • Manage innovative solutions for control systems upgrades to improve throughput while maintaining safety and quality.
  • Perform regular upkeep on the tools and software used by engineering and reliability and ensures the results are precise and functional.
  • Create and maintain schematics, drawings, and programs for processing equipment and site layouts.
  • Document and maintain control system schematics including electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic.
  • Install and maintain safety control devices and circuits such as light curtains and zone scanners.
  • Evaluate and improve material flow through the process lines in the service center operations.
  • Collaborate with the reliability team and offer support on PM's by running tests, diagnostics, and calibrations.
  • Provide recommendations for corrective actions for incident investigation.
  • Consult with equipment designers and manufacturing officers to develop a costeffective and working operations process.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend new manufacturing technology.
  • Support the development of systems and measurements that help the business make profitable decisions.
  • Other jobrelated duties and special projects as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • Technical associates' degree in electrical, mechanical, or industrial engineering or equivalent number of years' experience working in an engineering capacity.
  • Three (3) years of experience in industrial environment programming and troubleshooting equipment controls, safety circuits, HMI, drives, and PLC ladder logic.
  • Knowledgeable in hydraulic and pneumatic fluid power.
  • Proficient in PLC ladder programming and controls wiring.

  • Highly motivated selfstarter, able to prioritize projects, accept responsibility and follow through without close supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize and balance multiple projects.
  • Sense of urgency and ability to work in a fast paced and high stress environment.
  • Strong analytical ability to gather and interpret information, and develop, recommend, and implement solutions.
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fastpaced environment.
  • Ability to draw in 2D and/or 3D drawing platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trouble shooting control systems including PLC's, safety controllers, sensors, HMI's.
  • Prior experience in technical role where critical problem solving was required.
  • High and low voltage electrical knowledge
  • General understanding of hydraulic/pneumatic systems and their relationship with electrical controls
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical assembly/Fabrication methods

Supervisory Responsibility

  • No direct supervisory responsibilities.

Additional

  • Must be able to work outside normal business hours/days as needed.
  • Must be able to travel occasionally and work at an outside location.
  • Proven ability to work efficiently and effectively from a home office setting.
