To handle a range of responsibilities related to receiving and dispatching emergency calls for law enforcement, fire, ambulance, and other assistance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Under the supervision of the Assistant Chief Police of the Support Services Division or assigned designee.
Essential Job Functions

- Receive and respond to emergency service calls
- Dispatch necessary resources
- Maintain communication with units on assignment
- Log all field calls and dispatched units
- Input and retrieve public safety information using a computer terminal
- Handle teletype networks to access relevant information
- Coordinate emergency calls using telecommunications systems
- Document requests for warrants and DMV print-outs
- Maintain various logs and records related to dispatching activities
- Conduct equipment tests and inspections
- Perform general clerical tasks
- Maintain logs regarding public safety activities
- Ensure equipment is in working order
- Arrange for equipment repairs
- Perform other related duties as needed
- Adhere to regular attendance requirements
Qualification Guidelines
To meet the requirements for this position, individuals should have a blend of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions. Typically, this includes:
Education and/or Experience:
High School Diploma or GED is mandatory. Prior experience with radio or communication equipment is advantageous. Candidates must have completed or be willing to undertake and pass the Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T) Dispatch Course. Those selected without a Post Dispatcher Certificate must pass a written test focused on essential dispatching skills within a year of appointment.
Knowledge of:
Modern office procedures and computer equipment; proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Ability to:
- Work effectively under pressure
- Make sound judgments in emergency scenarios
- Learn Computer Aided Dispatch and 9-1-1 systems
- Comprehend emergency call reception and processing procedures
- Understand communication rules and regulations for operating radio systems
- Grasp radio broadcasting and dispatch procedures
- Familiarize with local geographic features and streets
- Follow record-keeping protocols
- Communicate clearly and collect information from distressed individuals
- Type accurately
- Follow instructions effectively
- Operate office equipment
- Work varied shifts including weekends and holidays
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships
Licenses and Certificates
If operating a City vehicle, must hold and sustain a valid Class "C" California Driver's License. Typing speed certification of 35 net WPM is required. Should obtain a P.O.S.T. Public Safety Dispatcher Certificate within a year of appointment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Typically works indoors in a clean environment. Noise level is moderate with occasional loud interruptions.
