I CLASS DEFINITION
An Emergency Dispatcher dispatches police units by two-way radio. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.
Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work rotating shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays. Work is performed in a radio communications station. Work requires mínimal physical exertion.

Dispatches police units, in accordance with nature of emergency request.
Operates a multi-channel radio transmitter, voice recorder, computer terminal with input keyboard.
Operates teletypewriter and printer to provide printed as well as verbal orders to units for verification purposes.
Maintains computerized updated record of movement, location and involvement of assigned units; maintains log of all calls and action taken.
IV. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to use radio communication equipment effectively.
Ability to type.
Ability to respond to emergencies quickly.
Ability to speak distinctly.
Ability to work calmly in stressful situations.
V. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requirements - Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate and four years of experience in public contact work including one year of experience in operating two-way radio and related communications equipment.
Equivalencies - Equivalent combination of education and experience; one year of experience in police emergency telephone communications work may be substituted for the one year of operating a two-way radio and related communications equipment.
