    Description

    Prepares work sites: digging, backfilling trenches, tunnel and shaft excavations

    Removes dirt and clears obstructions: around work areas like sewer mains, catch basins, valve basins, water and electrical vaults, manholes

    Sets and removes braces, shoring equipment: drives sheeting to support sides of excavations, prevent cave-ins

    Installs, repairs, and/or removes: concrete, masonry retaining and bearing walls

    Demolishes old pavement, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, sewers, catch basins

    Operates: bobcat, skid steer, frontend loader, forklift, electric and manual pallet jack as needed

    Excavates and grades: ground, leveling base and concrete

    Assists skilled trades workers: in scaffolding construction, up to approximately 200 feet above ground level

    Operates and maintains pneumatic tools: jack hammers, concrete/pavement breakers, sandblasters, clay spades

    Uses hand tools: shovels, picks, sledgehammers

    Mixes, pours concrete: specific amounts as directed

    Loads, unloads materials, equipment: from trucks, ensures proper tools, equipment on work site, in working order

    Helps lift, place materials: pipes, valves, hydrants, castings into trenches using pipe sticks, ropes, dollies, or other means as directed

    Removes materials: from worksites, below-grade areas by hand, power tools as directed

    Assists skilled trades workers: readying, supplying needed tools, equipment, materials

    Sets up: barricades, safety cones, steel street plates around work sites

    Removes rock: in underground tunnels

    Marks work sites: identifies underground utilities with paint

    Directs vehicular/pedestrian traffic: around work sites

    Notifies customers: of interruptions in water service

    THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

    Minimum Qualifications: Completion of a Department of Labor (DOL) Laborer Apprenticeship Program OR City of Chicago Laborer Apprenticeship Program OR at least two (2) years of work experience as a Construction Laborer or Laborer with the City of Chicago OR at least four (4) years of work experience as a Construction Laborer

    Licensure, Certification, Other Qualifications: Some positions may require a valid State of Illinois Driver's License depending on department assignment. Assignments requiring forklift operation will need training, evaluation per OSHA standards

    Working Conditions: Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, fumes or dust, oily/wet environment, hazardous conditions, work above/below ground, using scaffolds, ladders

    Equipment: Hand tools, manual equipment like hammer, shovels, power hoses, standard tools/equipment in heavy construction, personal protective equipment, safety devices

    Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (up to 100 pounds), walk/stand for extended periods, bend, stretch, twist, reach, move hands/arms to grasp, manipulate objects, access difficult spaces, operate hand tools, power tools, equipment

    NOTE: Apprenticeship Training Program certificate(s), journeyman card, resume, State of Illinois Driver's License must be submitted during processing

    Selection Requirements: No test or interview needed. Applicants meeting qualifications will be hired in a lottery/random order. Ties will be decided based on seniority per collective bargaining agreement

    Veterans Preference Note: City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to current, active military personnel and those with honorable/general discharge from the US Armed Forces

    Eligible candidates must show at least six months of active duty. Attach DD214 or a letter from Commanding Officer for verification
