About Wesley Smithers:

I am an Electrical Engineering student at the University of Texas at Arlington, graduating in 2026, with a strong foundation in embedded systems, hardware design, and research-driven development. I excel in translating complex technical concepts into clear, actionable ideas. This is a skill I honed through teaching robotics and programming to kids (ages 5 - 17) of varying skill levels.

My hands-on experience includes designing brushless motor controllers, programming FPGAs, developing custom hardware for neural network applications, and working on wireless communication access points during internships. Proficient in C programming, Arduino, Altium PCB design, HFSS, and SolidWorks, I thrive in fast-paced, challenging environments where I can learn by doing and contribute to impactful projects.

I am passionate about embedded systems and hardware research and development, seeking internship opportunities where I can apply my skills, grow professionally, and help drive innovative solutions.

Experience

I have diverse engineering experience across academic projects, research, and internships. I contributed to the design and development of a brushless motor controller as part of a team, showcasing my skills in hardware design and teamwork. While helping a professor with research, I assisted in developing application-specific hardware optimized for neural network acceleration. At my second internship, I helped create specialized wireless access points for bespoke networks intended to be used by first responders, gaining practical experience in wireless communications hardware.

In addition, I taught robotics and programming to youth, which strengthened my ability to communicate complex technical concepts effectively. I also completed an aerospace internship focused on flammability testing, adding exposure to regulated technical environments.

My technical proficiency spans C programming, Arduino, FPGA programming, PCB design with Altium, HFSS electromagnetic simulation, and SolidWorks CAD. I am confident using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, VNAs, and power supplies, with extensive hands-on experience building and soldering FPV drones as well as programming embedded controllers commonly available to hobbyists.

Education

Pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Arlington, expected to graduate in December 2026. Key coursework includes Digital Systems, C Programming, and an Electromagnetics Lab, where I developed strong skills in hardware design, embedded programming, and electromagnetic simulation using tools like HFSS. Hands-on projects and labs have reinforced my practical understanding of circuits, FPGA programming, and system design.
