Theresa D. Varela is an award-winning graphic designer, illustrator, photographer, and lettering artist based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. With a background that bridges fine art and strategic design, she creates visual stories that are both beautiful and effective—whether through branding, web design, marketing campaigns, or timeless hand-lettered art.

Theresa is the Graphic Designer and Social Media Content Manager for The Downs Racetrack & Casino, where she blends creativity and strategy across print, digital, and social platforms. She is also the owner of Silver Swirl Studios, specializing in calligraphy, engraving, and heirloom-quality design, and Bella Reina Photography, offering luxury portrait and bridal boudoir sessions that celebrate confidence and beauty.

A lifelong artist, Theresa’s passion for letters began in childhood when she discovered her mother’s graceful handwriting and a vintage Speedball textbook. That early spark grew into a career marked by both artistry and professionalism. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from The Art Center Design College (now SUVA) and also studied at FIDM Los Angeles.

Her creative work has earned ADDY and OBIE Awards, as well as Best of Show and People’s Choice honors at the New Mexico State Fair. A proud member of IAMPETH, Washington Calligraphers Guild, and past President of Escribiente, Theresa continues to merge artistry with design, crafting work that connects, inspires, and endures.
