About Sultan Abdul Wasay:
I hold a dual master's degree in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering from NC State. I am deeply interested in tackling challenges in thermal engineering, carbon capture, energy systems and power generation. My academic journey and professional experience have been shaped by a deep passion for the application of computer aided engineering.
At NC State, I have been part of Biocatalyst Interactions with Gases Collaboration, an interdisciplinary collaboration between NC State and Technical University Denmark to develop novel methods for carbon capture capture (funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation). From developing 3D two-phase flow models to simulating multiphase systems, I use computational tools like CFD to optimize processes and understand flow behavior. Collaborating with a diverse team of researchers has been an incredibly rewarding experience, allowing me to learn from different perspectives.
Before this, I gained hands-on experience as a Mechanical Engineer at Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station, where I optimized performance monitoring systems, streamlined KPIs, and improved quality assurance practices. These experiences shaped my problem-solving skills and reinforced my passion for innovation in the energy sector.
Beyond my professional life, I’m deeply passionate about giving back. I’ve spent years volunteering to help students, whether it’s tutoring underprivileged kids or mentoring peers. Outside the technical world, I’m all about finding balance and having fun. I enjoy making memes (because humor makes everything better), hanging out with friends and traveling to explore new cultures.
Experience
During my graduate studies at North Carolina State University, I specialized in thermal-hydraulic
analysis, focusing on carbon capture technologies and multiphase flow modeling. My thesis
research involved interface capturing simulations to model CO₂ absorption for carbon capture,
where I developed a numerical framework to analyze local flow physics in falling films. Additionally,
my capstone project utilized direct numerical simulation (DNS) to predict two-phase flow behavior
in counter-current gas-liquid systems. Furthermore, I learned about boiling heat transfer, phase
change heat transfer, advanced convective heat transfer, advanced radiative heat transfer and
computational fluid mechanics, and multiscale flow simulations as part of coursework that
equipped me with fundamentals of heat transfer and mass transfer process.
My professional experience as a Mechanical Engineer at the Chashma Nuclear Power Generating
Station solidifies my passion for nuclear energy. I was initially appointed to work on performance
and technical reports of the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant, Pakistan. Because of my passion
and diligence, my organization trained me on performance monitoring by means of KPIs. I
improvised KPIs dashboard using business intelligence tools to get a deep insight into
performance. Implementing the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) enhanced
performance monitoring system has also given me insight into how safety, efficiency, and
economic viability can be improved in nuclear operations.
