Sharleen Buel

I'm a soon-to-graduate PhD candidate in Biology with a passion for the intersection of science, art, and education. My current research focuses on circadian rhythms and immune metabolism, and I’m equally dedicated to STEM outreach, mentoring undergraduate researchers, and making science accessible through creative, visual storytelling. I bring energy, empathy, and a collaborative spirit to every classroom and lab I work in.

I am a biology PhD candidate with expertise in circadian rhythms, immunometabolism, and multi-omics approaches. My current research explores how macrophages respond to antigens, with a focus on mitochondrial function and central metabolism. Alongside my research, I have extensive experience mentoring undergraduate students in the lab and engaging in STEM outreach to make science more accessible. I also run a science- and art-themed small business, blending scientific communication with creative design. With a strong background in scientific research, public speaking, and interdisciplinary collaboration, I bring a unique blend of analytical rigor, creativity, and educational leadership.

I am currently completing a PhD in Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a specialization in circadian rhythms in the immune system. My expected defense date is Fall 2025.
