Paul Dewhurst
Manufacturing / Mechanical
About Paul Dewhurst:
I’m a Master’s graduate in Mechanical Engineering (MEng) from the University of Edinburgh, recently relocated to Austin, Texas.
I'm currently developing a modular simulation software suite in C++, aimed at building cross-platform tools for structural, fluid, and electromagnetic analysis. The project uses CMake and ImGui to create a modern simulation environment tailored for engineers and researchers.
I completed a summer internship at CERN in the Mechanical Engineering Department, focusing on pressure system design and safety. My work involved finite element analysis (FEA) using ANSYS and CAD design in CATIA, specifically analyzing the mechanical behavior of vacuum chamber components under thermal and structural loads.
For my Master’s thesis, I collaborated with HYPED to design a magnetic levitation system for a Hyperloop pod. I led a team of junior engineers, carried out FEM analysis for electromagnetic components, and developed detailed risk assessments as part of the system's design process.
Previously, I worked in the naval defence industry, where I performed noise and vibration testing, created Test Information Sheets, and contributed to component design using CREO.
Experience
- Accumulated 12 + months of mechanical engineering experience designing and simulating high-precision components for research and industrial applications (CERN UHV systems, NDT scanners).
- Designed detailed 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in CATIA V5 and Creo; managed BOMs and PLM workflows in Windchill.
- Performed structural and thermal FEA in ANSYS Mechanical Workbench, leveraging an advanced mathematical understanding of solver algorithms and custom multiphysics development to optimize performance, cost, and reliability.
- Authored technical documentation (specifications, engineering calculations, test information sheets, risk assessments) to guide cross-functional teams.
- Collaborated closely with instrumentation, automation, safety, and quality groups; passionate about leveraging simulation-driven design to advance Enapter’s green hydrogen electrolyser technology.
Education
MEng in Mechanical Engineering, a five-year integrated master’s program awarded Upper Second Class with Honours.
Curriculum covered project management, computational fluid dynamics, advanced mathematics, structural analysis, materials science and CAD/CAE.
