Dear Director,
If I may reflect one facet of the kaleidoscope of language and culture this world offers, may my ambition to
teach in foreign reaches bear me out in it. A recent graduate of the English Literature program at The
University of California Berkeley, your teaching hopeful, Michael Carroll, seeks to unfold the mechanics and
principles of the English language through unique and engaging learning exercises designed for students of
a broad range of ages, aptitudes, and skillsets. While my teaching focus is on reading comprehension and
writing structure, I am passionate about grammar, usage, and vocabulary.
I believe a successful teacher is one who holds curiosity at a premium and carries an open-minded
disposition. An effective classroom environment is one that accommodates a wide variety of learning styles
and cultural sensibilities. My philosophy of teaching involves a high level of student engagement and
interaction, not only to gauge progress and retention, but to cultivate a learning atmosphere that personalizes
language acquisition. I believe that once a student develops the mindset that acquiring a skill or set of
knowledge holds personal relevance to them, they will be galvanized into a state of enthusiasm based on the
mutual importance placed on the subject by them and the instructor.
Both my working and personal life have been characterized by a love of taking information, knowledge, and
experience and transforming it into practical and accessible material for others. My passion project at Tesla
was developing and delivering a 20-minute orientation for new Tesla owners which educated them on the
essential functions of their vehicle, as well as the exciting and unique features it had to offer. My upbeat and
compelling presence, coupled with the well-organized, carefully crafted PowerPoint presentation, made the
ordinarily dry and tedious process of purchasing a car a fun and memorable experience. Preparing and
executing a teaching plan is a deeply fulfilling task for me.

A recent graduate of the English Literature program at The University of California Berkeley, your teaching hopeful, Michael Carroll, seeks to unfold the mechanics and principles of the English language through unique and engaging learning exercises designed for students of a broad range of ages, aptitudes, and skillsets. The majority of my academic work at UC Berkeley has been on developing critical approaches to classic texts with the “close reading” technique. This technique applies close critical analysis to how language serves its literary purpose at the level of syntax, prosody, and word choice. 

While my primary teaching passion is for developing conversational English skills through speaking and pronunciation, I also value grammar, usage, and vocabulary.
