Lupita Herrera
Engineering / Architecture
About Lupita Herrera:
I am an engineer at Boeing, driven by a deep commitment to community empowerment. With a Magna Cum Laude in chemical engineering background, I've embraced a range of roles that align with my passion for uplifting underserved communities.
My diverse range of experiences in research, sustainability, and project management have been instrumental in fueling this passion. During my time as an undergraduate researcher, I investigated the challenges faced by underrepresented engineering students. I curated an art exhibit that engaged the Houston community, amplifying the voices of underrepresented engineering students. My contributions extended to co-authoring "Flash On: Capturing Minoritized Engineering Students’ Persistence through Photovoice Research," a feature in the Sustainability journal. This work not only deepened my ability to listen attentively but also awakened a creative dimension within me that complements my engineering mindset.
My role as a Project Lead with Engineers Without Borders equipped me with skills particularly beneficial for my engineering career. Leading a $70,120 water distribution project in Valle Valerio, Nicaragua, I guided a team of 20 members and team leads to construct a vital water tank and integrate it into the existing pipeline network. Alongside this, I successfully secured funds from generous donors. Over three years, including one year as the Project Lead, I honed my project management and leadership aptitude. Although I've transitioned from project leadership, I remain dedicated to the project's continuation by mentoring the project team.
As I progress in my journey at Boeing in South Carolina, I'm focused on further developing my current skillsets in active listening and collaborative teamwork. These attributes not only contribute to my growth as an engineer but also enhance my ability to serve the community effectively. Moreover, I'm eager to expand my technical knowledge by immersing myself in the 787 program. Through my participation in the rotational program, I'll gain insights into production and design engineering, offering me an opportunity to comprehend the complex process of building and delivering 787 airplanes to customers. With each stride, I aim to enhance my involvement within the commercial airline industry, channeling my passion and abilities to drive positive change.
Experience
I am an early-career chemical engineer with a strong foundation in project management and nonprofit leadership. My most significant experience comes from my role as Project Manager and Design Lead with Engineers Without Borders, where I successfully managed a three-year water distribution project in Nicaragua. This role showcased my abilities in international development, stakeholder management, and fundraising, including leading a successful social media campaign that raised $18,000. My professional journey also includes engineering roles at Boeing, where I've contributed to manufacturing and design improvements in the aerospace industry. I've gained valuable experience through internships at Williams Companies, Westlake Epoxy, and BHP, working on projects ranging from emissions reduction to sustainability initiatives. My diverse background demonstrates a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a passion for making a positive impact on global issues.
