About Laura Baker:
I’m a dedicated public health professional with a strong foundation in chronic disease prevention, epidemiology, and microbiology. My passion lies in improving community health through data-driven insights, collaborative problem-solving, and educational outreach. With a Master of Public Health from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a Bachelor of Science in Biology, Microbiology from Tennessee Technological University, I bring a multidisciplinary approach to public health challenges.
In my current role as an epidemiologist with the Hamilton County Health Department, I investigate reportable diseases, analyze health data trends, and collaborate with healthcare providers to develop and implement effective public health strategies. I translate complex data into actionable plans, creating health education initiatives and outreach materials that resonate with diverse audiences and support community-driven solutions.
Throughout my educational and professional career, I have taken on leadership roles in diverse projects, including co-directing a grant-funded science camp in The Bahamas, leading the evaluation of campus food insecurity programs, and managing large-scale conference logistics. My work in research and evaluation has focused on community needs assessments, program development, and outcomes-based recommendations, often leveraging tools like SPSS, Python, NVivo, and Adobe Creative Suite to maximize impact.
I thrive on collaboration, whether it’s working with local stakeholders, academic partners, or public health teams, to design programs that drive measurable improvements in health outcomes. My commitment to continuous learning is reflected in my ongoing professional development, including certifications in data analysis, systems thinking, and infectious disease modeling.
As an active member of the Tennessee and American Public Health Associations, I stay connected to the broader public health community and remain committed to finding innovative, equitable solutions to complex health issues. I’m excited about opportunities to contribute to meaningful public health initiatives and to collaborate with others who share a vision for healthier communities.
Let’s connect and explore how we can make a difference together!
Experience
At the Hamilton County Health Department, I serve as an epidemiologist, leading disease investigations and providing recommendations to mitigate public health risks. I conduct disease surveillance, analyze health data trends, and collaborate with clinical teams and community partners to develop targeted, data-driven public health strategies. My role involves creating outreach materials, delivering presentations, and preparing detailed reports to inform policy and support effective communication with diverse audiences, including the public and media.
Previously, as the Health Assessment and Planning Program Manager, I contributed to key public health reports, such as the 2023 Public Health Survey Summary and A Picture of Our Health 2024. My work focused on population and health research, supporting epidemiology efforts through data analysis and reporting to inform program planning and health improvement initiatives.
Education
I hold a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Chronic Disease Prevention and Control from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (May 2024), where I completed coursework in epidemiology, biostatistics, data analytics, and disease prevention. My capstone project focused on addressing barriers to improving health on San Salvador through a mixed methods approach, integrating community engagement and research.
I also earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology, with a concentration in Microbiology (Cum Laude), from Tennessee Technological University (May 2022). My studies included health science microbiology, medical microbiology, disease prevention, immunology, and statistical methods, laying the foundation for my work in public health and epidemiology.
