About Kylil Martin:
Hey, my name is Kylil "Ky" Martin. Currently, I am an Assistant Professor at California State University, Long Beach, in the School of Criminal Justice, Criminology, and Emergency Management. Through my research, I aim to disentangle the complex relationship of social institutions, especially as they relate to collective efficacy with low-income and communities of color. Within my teachings, I look to create a multidimensional learning environment to assist with my students' various learning styles and diverse experiences. This combination of research and pedagogy allows me to be an effective and present member and advocate for my community.
Experience
Since 2022, I have been serving as an Assistant Professor at California State University at Long Beach, where I teach courses including Criminological Theory (CRJU 304), Research Methods (CRJU 320), Crime Mapping (CRJU 462), and Crime Mapping (CRJU 662). Prior to this, from 2019 to 2022, I worked as an Instructor at Old Dominion University, teaching courses such as Introduction to Criminology in both classroom and distance learning formats, as well as Social Research Methods. Before my role as an Instructor, I served as a Research Assistant in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at Old Dominion University from 2018 to 2019.
Education
I earned my Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Old Dominion University in 2022 and my M.S. in Criminal Justice and Criminology from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 2018. Additionally, I also hold a B.S. in Psychology with a Human Service Concentration from Appalachian State University, which I completed in 2016.
