About Jose Tamayo:

I am a substitute teacher in the State of Washington. I have been working subbing at mainly secondary level schools for the past year, but I have worked as well at elementary and middle schools as well since 2023. Fife Public schools and Franklin Pierce School District are where I have been offering my services in recent years.

Before that, from 2017 to 2022 I was a full time Special Education Teacher at a Junior High school teaching and being the case manager for students with profound physical and in many cases cognitive disabilities as well.

I worked for 3 months as a full time MLL (Multilingual learner) Paraeducator at Elmhurst Elementary in the Franklin Pierce School District.

I am fully bilingual (Spanish and English.

Experience

I am an educator and support professional with a deep commitment to helping students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs thrive. Over the past decade, I’ve worked in Special Education roles across elementary and junior high settings, where I’ve designed individualized learning supports, collaborated closely with multidisciplinary teams, and built strong, trusting relationships with students and families. My work includes supporting medically fragile students and adapting instruction to meet a wide range of academic and developmental goals, reflected in responsibilities such as “providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans” and “assessing student progress toward objectives” .

My professional path is shaped by a broader commitment to inclusion, creativity, and community. Before becoming a teacher, I served as a paraeducator, librarian, and youth mentor, and earlier in my career I spent more than a decade as a professional visual artist, creating commissioned work for hotels, churches, and galleries while teaching art to students of all ages. I’ve also led art programs for children with Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, where I developed curricula that “stimulate creativity” and promote confidence and independence.

Alongside my educational work, I bring leadership experience from roles in production supervision and small‑business management, where I trained teams, ensured safety and quality, and oversaw day‑to‑day operations. Across all of these roles—education, art, management, and community service—my focus has remained consistent: helping people grow, learn, and succeed in environments that value dignity, patience, and human connection.

Fluent in English and Spanish (with conversational Italian), I thrive in multicultural settings and enjoy building bridges between communities, families, and schools. I’m driven by the belief that every learner deserves the chance to discover their strengths, and that thoughtful, individualized support can change the trajectory of a student’s life.
