About Jomari Fernandez:

I'm a senior mechanical engineering student specializing in manufacturing, HVAC & mechatronics with 1.5 years of civil engineering-related Internship experience. I am currently working as a design trainee II at San Francisco Public Works where I review wet utility (water & sewer) designs, and stamped engineering, electrical and architectural drawings from companies such as PG&E, AT&T, CableCom LLC, Sheeran Pipeline, Bassett Engineering, etc.

I want to express my interest in working as a safety coordinator intern.

Southland is the next best step in my career, both as a potential intern and entry-level engineer, because I have completed four engineering-related and one legislative-related internships that involved design, construction, inspections, and communication. These experiences are valuable for Southland because:

  • I have diverse engineering experience that allows me to manage complex construction projects. My experience sending RFIs, maintaining consistent communication with stakeholders, and serving as a liaison between contractors and city agencies showcases my strong communication and coordination skills. These are important for effective collaboration within Southland's team and with external partners. My technical skills will also help streamline project planning and execution, maximizing value and efficiency for Southland.
  • My experience in processing permits, analyzing project budgets, and managing tasks efficiently aligns with Southland's full project management capabilities. My ability to implement efficient practices and streamline processes will contribute to Southland's goal of delivering projects on time and within budget.
  • My proactive approach to developing flowcharts for emergency construction projects and reducing expected workloads demonstrates your innovation and problem-solving skills. Southland's focus on prefabrication and modular construction will benefit from my ability to think creatively and improve construction quality and control project schedules.
  • My involvement in legislative research, community benefits meetings, and support for non-English speakers highlights my dedication to public infrastructure and community advocacy. This aligns well with Southland's commitment to providing cost-effective, optimal solutions that benefit the community and ensure long-term project success.

Experience

I am an aspiring engineer with a diverse background in design, construction, and project management, gained through five internships in San Francisco and the rest of Bay Area cities. My roles as a design trainee, consultant, engineering intern, and legislative intern have equipped me with a robust skill set that aligns perfectly with Southland's commitment to innovative construction methods and technology-driven safety coordination and project management.

During my internships, I have:

  • Plan-checked private contractors' wet utility (sewer & water) designs, site grading, curb ramps, concrete designs, and architectural drawings, ensuring compliance and quality.
  • Processed permits worth more than $2.5 million and assisted engineers in analyzing data accuracy of applications worth over $21,000, showcasing my ability to handle significant project components efficiently.
  • Collected and communicated critical project information, acting as a liaison between multiple engineers, contractors, and city agencies, including PG&E, SF Public Utilities Commission, and Sheeran Pipelines.
  • Maintained consistent communication with stakeholders, sending over 250 RFIs and coordinating with applicants such as AT&T, Cordia, and Bassett Engineering.
  • Analyzed electrical and other utility drawings made by companies such as PG&E, CableCom LLC, and Sheeran Pipeline, Inc., demonstrating my technical proficiency.
  • Drafted judicial letters, press releases, talking points, and newsletters, highlighting my strong communication skills and attention to detail.
  • Attended committee hearings, convenings, staff meetings, and caucus meetings, providing legislative support and writing summary briefs.
  • Researched legislative-related issues, particularly in public infrastructures, public health, and advocacy, underscoring my dedication to community-focused initiatives.

I am proficient in using technology tools such as Revit, Bluebeam, various GIS tools, and applications like SolidWorks, Fusion 360, and many more. My proactive approach to developing flowcharts for emergency construction projects and my ability to decrease expected workloads have honed my problem-solving skills and innovation.

As I prepare for my FE exam and anticipate graduating in December 2025, I am eager to bring my diverse experiences and technical skills to Southland. I am excited about the opportunity to contribute to Southland's projects through prefabrication, modular construction, and advanced technology tools, ensuring efficient project execution and delivering optimal results.

Education

I am currently a senior mechanical engineering student at California State University, Sacramento. I acquired an associate's degree in mathematics in August 2022. I have done laboratory activities related to material testing (concrete, metal, and plastics), simulations, CAD modeling, and many more.

I am actively participating in leadership and extracurricular activities such as reviving a club, gaining up to 36 active members, landing $3,300 funding, making our club well-known and established through a publicly posted article, and leading it as the president. Beyond that, I am shadowing officers in American Society of Civil Engineers and mentoring students in Willie Brown Fellowship. I have also held other positions such as being a co-founder of Building Bridges and serving as a secretary for Student Associations of Laboratory Scientists.
