About Jazel Vanlandschoot:

Hi, I’m Jazel VanLandschoot, a resilient and resourceful senior at Michigan State University pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science with a minor in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. As a first-generation, queer college student, I am deeply driven to leverage data science for impactful, real-world applications. My passion lies at the intersection of machine learning, statistical modeling, and AI solutions, with a particular focus on fields like climatology, genetics, epidemiology, and astronomy.

With a strong foundation in Python, R, C++, and SQL, I have excelled in computational analytics and contributed to projects like analyzing systemic discrimination through ShinyApp development and researching Flint’s water crisis. As an active mentor with Girls Who Code, I enjoy inspiring the next generation of women in tech. I am eager to continue driving meaningful change through innovative data-driven insights and collaborative problem-solving.

Experience

I have a diverse range of professional experiences focused on data analysis, sustainability, mentorship, and research. At Michigan State University, I contributed to sustainability initiatives by developing impactful programs like the "Spartans in Action" pledge and conducting metadata analysis to advance eco-friendly practices. As a data analyst with Qside, I developed a ShinyApp to study systemic discrimination, applying advanced statistical tools to real-world justice issues. My research on Flint’s water crisis further showcased my ability to analyze complex data for social and environmental impact.

Additionally, I have served as an Undergraduate Learning Assistant, helping peers master computational data science concepts, and as a mentor with Girls Who Code, where I inspired young women to explore technology through hands-on projects like coding, robotics, and web development. My work reflects a commitment to leveraging data science for meaningful, interdisciplinary applications.

Education

I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Data Science at Michigan State University, with an expected graduation in Spring 2025. My academic journey has provided me with a strong foundation in statistical analysis, machine learning, and programming languages such as Python, R, C++, and SQL. In addition to my major, I am completing a minor in Environmental Studies and Sustainability, combining my passion for data science with environmental impact. I have been honored with the Class of 1964 Kaufman Award for community leadership and excellence, as well as the STARR Charitable Foundation Scholarship, which recognizes academic and personal achievements.
