Hadeel Rass

I am an environmental engineering student at Michigan State University graduating with my bachelors degree in December 2023. I am searching for a three month internship for summer 2023. My career goal is to use renewable energy to uplift urban communities. I am passionate about sustainable urban development, it is the future of our planet. I have completed a multitude of classes pertaining to sustainable energy. These classes include thermodynamics, material and energy balances, environmental chemistry, engineering sustainability, surveying, and many more. As my interest lies in urban development, I have also completed classes in urban planning. Additionally, I am comfortable with many programming languages and design softwares. These include python, javascript, excel, sketchup, and CAD (computer aided design). I am bilingual, fluent in both Arabic and English. I am well suited for positions regarding sustainable urban energy.

As I am still pursuing my degree, my professional experience is that of a college student. I work for a program called Girls Who Code through my university's Women in Engineering office. I am a mentor teaching introductory computer programming to middle school and high school students. This experience solidifies my understanding of programming languages. 

I am a lead mentor, I manage a team of mentors. I divide tasks and organize the curriculum. Being a lead mentor has enhanced my leadership and teamwork abilities. I am comfortable working with different personalities and making appropriate executive decisions. 

This program teaches students from all over the world via Zoom. I have taught programming to kids in the United States, Belize, and Ghana. This gives me insight into working with people of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. A team compiled of diverse backgrounds encourages creativity and new ideas. I am familiar working in these kinds of teams.

My most relevant classes are as follows:

People and the environment - a class that focuses on the relationship between human societies and the natural ecosystem. I learned the impacts that our cities have on the environment and the impact that the environment has on our cities. I understand the interactions between the natural world and the urban world, a crucial skill for sustainable engineering.

Engineering sustainability - this class focuses on understanding sustainability and applying it to engineering. I have learned the impacts of various energy sources, life cycle assessments of products, and economic impacts of sustainability. I am comfortable assessing the sustainability of engineering projects and providing sustainable solutions to engineering problems.

Thermodynamics - this is a critical physics course for engineering. I learned how to calculate and interpret systems involving heat and energy. The mathematical and scientific skills I gained from this course can be directly applied to any engineering project, specifically projects surrounding energy.

Materials and energy balances - this is a chemical engineering course that taught me the technical skills for energy balances. I learned how to calculate energy balances, a skill necessary for any energy engineering.

Environmental chemistry - this is a chemistry course focused on environmental processes. This is a technical class that has given me the knowledge to compute chemical processes pertaining to the environment. I studied the chemical impacts of oil spills, air pollution, micro plastics, non renewable energy, water quality, and more. After taking this course, I can confidently compute the chemical affects these processes have on our environment and societies. 

Urban planning - during this class, I was exposed to the many facets of building a city. I learned how spatial design impacts the function of a society and its economy. I also learned how resource distribution affects a city. This is relevant as my interest lies in urban development. I can apply knowledge from this course to a career in urban energy.

Computer science - this is a C++ and Python course where I learned to use both languages. This class piqued my interest in computer programming. After taking this course I began to explore programming languages on my own. I have written a multitude of extensive codes as I am very comfortable with computer programming.

Computer aided design (CAD) - this course focused on computer aided design and geographical mapping using three dimensional modeling programs and geographical information systems. Using AutoCAD and ArcGIS, I modeled a multitude of engineering and mapping projects. I have the skills to model any engineering project using these programs.

Surveying - this is an engineering measuring and surveying lab. I was given professional surveying equipment and taught how to properly use them. I surveyed many different projects, performed surveying calculations, and used a field book. The skills I learned in this class can be applied to any field work engineering.

As you can see, my education thus has enhanced my knowledge of sustainable urban engineering. The skills and knowledge gained from these courses can be easily combined and applied to many engineering and energy projects. bc
