Experience

I have over 34 years’ experience in teaching English within the context of the UK National Curriculum, Cambridge and Edexcel Examinations.

I have high levels of proven teaching ability and interpersonal skills, with appropriate and flexible curriculum expertise.

I have taught English at secondary, college and university levels in Ghana, the UK, Bangladesh, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Somaliland.

As teacher of English, I work with other members of the teaching team to provide outstanding teaching to create a vibrant and distinctive culture for my students; ensure that all my students are able to thrive and engage in both academic and vocational learning to achieve above and beyond their highest potential whilst developing personal and employable skills and or to further their education; plan and execute a diverse program that meets individual learner needs within English

I am able to use effective teaching and learning strategies to motivate and raise achievements of my students across the ability range. I use Communicative Language teaching approach, differentiated and personalized instruction. With this I use different interaction activities to match different purposes and outcomes. I allow time for the students to be actively involved in their learning, to rehearse new learning, to reflect, to do something with the new learning material. I am able to achieve learner-centeredness with the students. They become self-motivated and feel confident by working in pairs and individually presenting their work. Furthermore, activities serve to consolidate and reinforce the four language skills from which the students benefit. I use a variety of open-ended questions which generate different responses. I act as a facilitator by interacting with students as they undertake tasks. This gives them encouragement to work harder. My lessons have clear objectives and structure and a variety of activity-based learning, applications to real life situations and an element of fun and competition motivate them. I deliberately control the seating and grouping arrangements and plan activities that encourage the boys and girls to learn from one another.

I possess key abilities for the post. I have acquired classroom management skills like effective planning of lesson preparation, schemes of work, initiating field trips and organizing activities like games etc.; effective organisation where I mobilise students on tasks, sustain their attention and ensure pace of time in lessons; communication which expects me to establish good rapport with my students.

As class tutor I see pastoral care as a holistic approach by which I attempt to meet the personal, social, emotional and intellectual needs of every student in my school, in order that each might participate fully and gain maximum benefit from everything the school has to offer. My OBJECTIVES in the Pastoral Care to my students are (a) providing personal support appropriate to their needs. This concerns curriculum, learning and teaching, progress, reporting and attainment. (b) Contributing to the development of a positive school ethos which seeks to promote the self-esteem of the students. I take part in EXTRACURRICULAR activities. I use the Drama club to help my students to improve upon their fluency and acquire stagecraft skills. These help them in their English lessons. I organize debates to stimulate them to engage in critical thinking. All these constitute a viable background support in students’ classroom work and the conduct of assignments. These improve their writing skills. I use the computer learning techniques such as Moodle and Webquest to offer my students more authentic examples of the English language in use (newspapers, broadcast media) and opportunities for realistic communication (e-mail), which can facilitate language learning. With the use of computers, I am able to address the different learning styles of my students through multimedia with pictures, sound and text offering several different ways to deal with the same material to suit various learning styles. They use computers as tools for communication in which they are able to engage in interaction using the target language.

I use formative assessment. This is an approach which requires me to test students regularly to identify problems and offer feedback to help overcome them. I engage them in self reflection and let them keep track of and share what they know. I give homework in their diaries and monitor their use. I establish contacts with parents using the homework diaries. I then inform them of the achievements of their wards. This interest encourages the students to increase their achievements and maintain their high levels.

Education

I possess a post graduate teaching degree in English teaching from the International House, Hastings and University of Exeter, Exeter (UK) and B.A., Dip. Ed.
