About Douglas Deutsch:
I'm a graduating student at Davidson College, NC with a double major in Psychology and Mathematics. I have always loved puzzles and projects, even as a kid I would spend hours making inventions or building Lego structures with secret compartments. Currently I scratch the problem-solving itch through neuroscience research and mathematical proof writing. I love math for the way that different concepts interweave seamlessly and precisely. I love psychology/biology for meaningfulness of the results, and for the experience of actually walking the walk to create meaningful progress in scientific and medical fields.
Experience
I have worked several temporary jobs in manufacturing and restaurants in high school over the summers. I worked for a local print shop for several years, and gained experience in customer relations as well as working machinery used for book print, and poster making making. At Davidson I was a DCI facilitator, which was a fellowship position with the Deliberative Citizenship Initiative where I led diverse groups of people into productive discussions on current issues. Also at Davidson, I was a student researcher in an Parkinson's Disease neuroscience lab. We performed surgery on rats, and conducted behavioral testing, and brain imaging analysis.
Education
I have a double major in Math and Psychology. Math classes have helped me hone my problem solving skills. Particularly, I know how to stay with a problem until it is done. I love the content and applicability of psychology classes. There are so many widespread problems that can be attacked from a psychological perspective. There are many different areas of psychology that I am familiar with. The benefit of taking psychology at a liberal arts school is how wide of a range of psych classes I had the opportunity to take. I know about cognitive areas, dabbled in psychodynamics, and spent a good amount of time learning biological and behavioral psychology. With that said, I have been able to get an in-depth experience of psychology because Davidson allows for undergraduate researchers to work with the actual professors, who are each leaders in their respective fields. I feel very fortunate to have been offered the opportunities that Davidson has.
