About Catherine Forman:

My passion for ecology and biology grew from a deep desire to bridge the gap between scientific research and the general public. Throughout my studies, I became acutely aware of how environmental conservation efforts and scientific research often remain disconnected from everyday life. I realized that to make a true impact in preserving our natural world, it is essential to engage the public, raise awareness, and foster an appreciation for the critical role science plays in daily life.

Through my work with organizations like the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the New York Botanical Garden, I saw firsthand how engaging communities with practical, hands-on experiences can connect them to the environment and encourage sustainable practices. These roles gave me valuable insight into how science can educate, inspire, and spark action, while also enhancing my understanding of the challenges faced in conservation.

I earned a degree in Biology and Ecology with a minor in Environmental Science from Susquehanna University, which equipped me with a solid foundation in both ecological theory and practical environmental solutions. My education not only fueled my interest in the natural world but also honed my skills in scientific research, which I applied as a Laboratory Manager at Susquehanna University. In this role, I managed the living collection of plants and animals in the lab, ensuring their health and well-being for educational purposes. This included implementing care protocols and promoting the ethical treatment of living organisms.

As a Research Assistant, I focused on analyzing plankton community structures in freshwater systems, particularly comparing the plankton communities of stratified and unstratified reservoirs. I identified species of zooplankton and phytoplankton and examined their responses to abiotic factors such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and alkalinity. My research also explored the relationship between these communities and water quality, contributing to a deeper understanding of ecosystem health. I presented my findings twice at the Annual River Symposium at Bucknell University, further strengthening my ability to communicate complex scientific information to a broader audience.

In addition to my research and fieldwork, I hold a Biology teaching certification, which allows me to share my knowledge of biology and ecology with others in educational settings. While my focus is on environmental research and conservation, my certification reflects my dedication to conveying the importance of science and nature to others, whether through direct teaching or community outreach.

This combination of education, research, and hands-on experience in managing biological systems has equipped me with the skills necessary to tackle real-world conservation challenges. My work as a Resource Ranger has deepened my commitment to conservation by blending ecological knowledge with community outreach, helping park visitors connect with the natural world in meaningful ways.

On top of my professional career, I enjoy photography, quilting, and hiking, activities that allow me to further connect with nature, express my creativity, and find balance in my life.

Resource Ranger

As a Resource Ranger at Promised Land State Park, I am responsible for creating and delivering educational programming aimed at increasing public understanding of park resources, regulations, and the natural world. My duties include conducting safety inspections of park facilities, identifying and mitigating potential hazards, and ensuring compliance with park rules. I also monitor visitor activities to ensure their safety and provide critical information to the public about park services and regulations. Additionally, I collaborate with ranger staff, maintenance personnel, and clerical teams to maintain smooth operations within the park and contribute to the overall visitor experience.

Laboratory Manager

In this leadership role, I managed 22 individuals while overseeing laboratory operations, including scheduling, inventory management, staff training, and conflict resolution. I provided direct care to approximately 120 animals from various species, such as mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and arthropods, ensuring their feeding, medical needs, and general well-being were met. Additionally, I was responsible for maintaining a greenhouse with over 400 plant species, performing tasks such as watering, fertilizing, repotting, and pest control. I also contributed to the conservation of a pond sanctuary, ensuring its proper care under different weather conditions. I collaborated with organizations such as the Chesapeake Conservancy and Freshwater Research Institute to promote conservation initiatives and community outreach programs.

As a Research Assistant, I conducted research on plankton communities in Snyder County, PA, comparing the effects of stratified and unstratified reservoirs on plankton populations. In this role, I designed and implemented biology unit and lesson plans for 110 students in both Advanced Biology and IB Biology classes. I created and evaluated assignments and exams, analyzing student performance to identify areas where students needed support. I also integrated technology into lessons, including interactive platforms such as Kahoot, Canvas, Google platforms, and virtual lab simulations, to enhance student engagement and learning.

I designed and implemented environmental education lessons based on the BEETLES (Better Environmental Education, Teaching, Learning & Expertise Sharing) curriculum for middle school students (grades 4-8). My lessons focused on fostering a deeper understanding of ecological concepts and environmental conservation. Stream Ecology Institute Counselor

I served as a counselor for the Stream Ecology Institute, where I led a group of 12 high school students in fieldwork and ecological research techniques. I taught them how to collect and analyze environmental data, including water quality measurements and biodiversity assessments, and provided instruction on laboratory techniques for identifying macroinvertebrates, zooplankton, and phytoplankton. During my volunteer experience in the Galápagos Islands, I assisted at the Giant Tortoise Breeding Center, where I helped with the care and feeding of tortoises and participated in general maintenance tasks. I also took part in environmental conservation efforts, such as removing invasive plant species and reforesting indigenous vegetation. Additionally, I contributed to wildlife monitoring efforts by surveying sea lions, endemic birds, and marine iguanas, with data collected being used by the Galápagos National Park in their annual wildlife reports. Furthermore, I taught English to 30-40 Spanish-speaking students, ages 5-18, for 7-10 hours per week, enhancing my cross-cultural communication skills and providing valuable educational support to the local community.
