Abel Zemedkun Girma

Enthusiastic Human Health with Epidemiology graduate currently pursuing an MPH in Epidemiology & Biostatistics, eager to expand upon my educational and experiential foundation. Experienced in research methods, health education & communication with solid training in community engagement and service learning. Motivated to excel in the public health sector currently seeking an internship position related to my field of study. Highly determined and adaptive with a strong work ethic and ability to succeed in either team-based or independently motivated environments and quickly master new skills.

I have a strong passion for health equity and maternal and infant health. My previous research experiences in this field have given me a deeper understanding of the disparities and inequities in health outcomes and a strong desire to contribute to reducing maternal and child mortality rates. During my gap year, I committed my efforts to work on research that aims to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in rural Ethiopia using low-cost interventions. My work entailed the organization and review of different Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) implementation models using Stata 16 to analyze the predictors and barriers of KMC for the improvement of upcoming models that will be developed. The findings of my research were able to contribute to the development of upcoming implementation phases of the intervention.

I also worked as a Community Service Learning Partner, where I designed and delivered scientific health lessons to middle school students. This training and experience equipped me with invaluable skills and allowed me to develop public speaking and facilitation discussion skills. 

I completed my bachelors at Emory University in Human Health with an Epidemiology focus and a Global Health minor. I am now pursuing an MPH degree at Washington University in St. Louis, with a specialization in Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
