With over students, FOM is one of the largest universities in Europe and Germany's university for working professionals. It is an initiative of the non-profit foundation Bildungs-Centrum der Wirtschaft, based in Essen. FOM offers working professionals the opportunity to study in a digital live format or in person, without having to interrupt or give up their employment. The university offers more than 40 practice-oriented degree programs in the fields of business and management, business and psychology, business and law, health and social sciences, IT management, and engineering. Classes are held in various study time models at one of the 35 university centers in Germany and Vienna. Starting in the winter semester of 2021, FOM will also expand its study offerings with the digital live format, where lectures are broadcasted online from multifunctional FOM studios, setting new standards in higher education.

Practical relevance is a top priority at FOM: The university maintains close relationships with over 1,000 partner companies, including corporations such as Bertelsmann, IBM, Siemens, and Telekom, as well as many medium-sized companies.
