***: Provide customer service, leadership and guidance to all members in classes. Instruct group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. Effectively builds community within class. Instructor will modify class as needed to meet varied health, ability and cultural needs.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and wellbeing
  • Instructors are expected to adhere to the scheduled format and description of the class.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants' capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrates achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills or overall health and wellbeing.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Instructors must record accurate class attendance.
  • Contact supervisor with any equipment issues.
  • Music selection must be appropriate and in line with the YMCA's position as both a community and familybased organization

OTHER EXPECTATIONS:


  • Maintain required certifications.
  • Attend mandatory meetings and trainings.
  • Always record class attendance totals on the sheet provided
  • Use Dayforce scanner when arriving and exiting class and record the number of classes taught
  • Attend a minimum of 2 all staff meetings per year
  • Take all online YMCA mandatory safety courses
  • Demonstrate and model the YMCA's four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility
  • Exhibit personal and professional behavior in a manner consistent with the best interest of the Association, so as not to bring discredit to the Association
  • Perform such other jobrelated duties as may be periodically assigned by the Supervisor
  • Support the Annual Community Support Campaign

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Current Group Fitness Certification from a nationally recognized organization (example
  • YMCA, AFAA, ACE, IFTA, NETA, AAAI/ISMA)
  • Minimum 1 year consistent teaching experience is preferred
  • Ability to teach 2 or more class formats is desired

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical Effort and Dexterity:


  • The ability to control your own body weight through movement is necessary. Bending, lifting and twisting may be intergraded into most group exercise class formats. Instructors should exemplify the ability to use designated class modalities. The ability to move equipment is necessary in many class formats.

Visual Acuity, Hearing, Speaking:


  • In most cases the ability to follow musical beats is a requirement. In addition verbal cues are needed to assist members in following along.
  • Instructors should visually identifying participants in need of modifications and cueing proper format.
Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions.
