Assist in the delivery of medical/surgical nursing care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse to a patient population ranging from infancy to geriatric, who present with varying stages of development, and diverse physical, cognitive and coping abilities, literacy levels, ethnic back-grounds and health beliefs.

Utilizing the nursing process under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements and evaluates, in collaboration with the patient, family and other health team members, the nursing care for assigned patients, demonstrating clinical competency and maintaining standards of professional nursing.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Valid licensure in West Virginia as a Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


EXPERIENCE:


  • One year of health care experience preferred

  • Under the supervision of an RN, analyzes the patient's current health status and medical history.
  • Assists the RN in the formulation and initiation plan of care based on patient needs. Establishes priority of care based on physical, developmental, and psychological needs. Initiates nursing interventions based on relevant data collection.
  • Under the supervision and in collaboration with an RN, evaluates and documents the effectiveness of interventions and modifies the plan of care and expected outcomes as appropriate. Applies these principles while monitoring patient condition and while providing pain management and other interventions that would be appropriate.
  • Under the supervision of an RN, appropriately assesses patient/family learning needs. Provides teaching materials and properly documents when teaching has been initiated, reinforced, and completed.
  • According to physicians, orders and RN supervision, demonstrates age-appropriate medication administration while using two unique patient identifiers. Documents medication administration accurately, including its effectiveness when appropriate. Scans patient and medication barcodes in Meditech 85 % (Meditech % is JMC standard) of the time on units that use BMV as applicable.
  • Makes effective decisions to resolve clinical and interpersonal problems.
  • Uses tactful communications in sensitive and/or emotionally charged situations.
  • Follows up with supervisor regarding any reported complaints, conflicts, or concerns.
  • Promotes positive public relations with patients, staff, visitors, and physicians.
  • Remains productive when stressed.
  • Accurately describes the clinical situation and elicits input from staff on a consistent basis.
  • Shares reliable, concise, relevant information in a timely manner to staff, patient, and co-workers.
  • Uses written, verbal, and electronic communication for maximizing comprehensive information exchange.

Complies with Appropriate safety standards:
Narcotic counts, Incident reports, Equipment failures, Crash cart checks, Medication security.


  • Identifies proper PPE for use in airborne, droplet, contact, and standard precautions.
  • Collects and transports specimens in approved containers, according to laboratory specifications. Labels all specimens correctly in the presence of the patient when appropriate.
  • Routinely follows universal precautions in all aspects of patient care, including before invasive procedures are performed.
  • Exercises proper stewardship through the appropriate use of supplies, equipment, and time.
  • Consistently documents to ensure that supplies and medications are accurately charged.
  • Willingly accepts assignments within scope of practice, skill set and level of competence.
