GENERAL DESCRIPTION


Under the direction of the HCS Program Manager and within federal, state and local guidelines performs entry-level to routine habilitative and rehabilitative care work with individuals who have developmental disabilities.


This position works on a rotating schedule that changes every other week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Direct Support Staff provides direct care and services to persons with developmental disabilities.

The Direct Support Staff is available to the individuals served during their assigned shift to provide ongoing availability to the individuals served.

Duties consist of quality interaction and support of individuals in all activities of daily living, personal care, routine housekeeping, cooking, shopping, and community integration.

Responsibilities also include emergency behavior or health related interventions when needed. Serves as a positive role model for individuals served and represents the Center in the community when on duty. Direct Care Staff may be assigned to any home within their assigned shift based on organizational need.

Direct Care Staff designated as a "floater" position may be assigned to any home within their assigned shift based on organizational need.

The assigned shift may vary and may include any week/weekend day, evening, or night shift.

Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

This position will include transportation to individuals served between residence and Fun Night on Thursday evenings. May also include providing community support services to individuals who reside in the community.


Interaction with individuals served:

Develops rapport with each individual served in a manner that demonstrates respect and an approach that centers on each person's goals and preference.



  • Consistently asks individuals their preferences and consistently acts upon those preferences.
  • Communicates and acts in a manner that supports the rights of individuals.
  • Utilizes communication techniques, including verbal Prevention and Management of Aggressive behavior (PMAB) and behavior management methods, to prevent need for more intrusive measures of behavior intervention.
  • Actively protects individuals from abuse, neglect, and violations of their rights.
  • Interactions with individuals served demonstrate and promote dignity and respect.

Ensures safety of individuals served by providing adequate supervision to ensure health and safety needs are met and/or reported for each individual served.

  • Provides supervision according to individual Implementation Plan
  • Reports health or safety concerns to nursing and supervisory personnel immediately.
  • Completes incident and medication errors reports as needed

Training and program implementations:
Is knowledgeable and follows Individual Implementation Plans and Behavior Management Plans or Behavior Guidelines.


  • Completes all documentation required for program implementation including training objectives, behavior data cards and observation notes.
  • Must stay compliant with all required training.
  • Incorporates training identified in the individual plans into daily activities as required.

Financial Assistance:
Assists individuals served with money, record keeping, and purchasing as required per Center procedures.


  • Assists individuals served with purchases.
  • Retains and submits all receipts per center guidelines
  • Ensures appropriate documentation completed for all transactions.
  • Assists individuals served with monies as stated in individual served Implementation Plan (IP).

Emergency intervention:
Provides emergency intervention when necessary according to DADS and Center rules and procedures.


  • Provides verbal and physical PMAB intervention correctly when necessary.
  • Provides CPR in an emergency until other medical aid arrives.
  • Provides emergency and nonemergency first aid until professional medical aid arrives or as directed by licensed medical professional.
  • Maintains all emergency intervention training according to Center policies and procedure
