POSITION:

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT SPECIALIST**
LOCATION:REGISTRAR'S OFFICE**
JOB SUMMARY:The Prior Learning Assessment Specialist, a part of the Transfer Resource ream, coordinates the evaluation and validation of prior learning experiences for both new and continuing students.

In this role, they will facilitate the assessment of transcripts, portfolios, and other forms of documentation to identify course equivalencies and credits earned through experiential learning, evaluate transfer credits, and assist in outreach efforts aimed at prospective students.

By highlighting the opportunities for credit through prior learning, they will support the Transfer Resource Center's mission of student success and play a key role in attracting a diverse and talented pool of applicants to the university.

Their responsibilities will extend to include a collaborative effort with admissions to devise strategies that leverage prior learning assessment as a recruitment tool, ensuring prospective students are aware of the pathways available to them for recognizing their previous educational and experimental achievements.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Collect and assess portfolios and documentation of prior learning, coordinating with academic departments to determine course equivalencies and credit eligibility.
  • Review transfer students' transcripts, portfolios, and prior learning documentation to assess for equivalencies and credit eligibility, emphasizing the facilitation of prior learning assessment opportunities.
  • Work closely with academic departments and faculty to ensure transfer credits align with university curriculum standards, playing a crucial role in integrating students' past learning experiences into their new academic journey.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of transfer credits, adhering to university policies and accreditation standards, to maintain the integrity of the academic process.
  • Offer personalized advising to transfer students on the outcomes of their prior learning assessments, transfer credits, and potential academic pathways, guiding them towards successful integration into the university.
  • Collaborate with the registrar's office to update student records promptly, ensuring the smooth transition of transfer credits into students' academic profiles.
  • Provide in depth guidance and support to transfer students, helping them understand their credit evaluations, academic options, and degree requirements, thereby enhancing their university experience.
  • Play a key role in developing and refining transfer credit evaluation processes, guidelines, and resources, aiming to streamline and standardize practices within the Transfer Office.
  • Keep abreast of the latest trends and best practices in prior learning assessment, advocating for continuous improvement in assessment methods and student support.
  • Work in partnership with admissions and other university stakeholders to devise and implement strategies, outreach efforts, and programs that promote the recruitment of prospective students through highlighting prior learning assessment opportunities.
  • Engage in transfer orientation and educational initiatives, informing new students about the prior learning assessment process, credit transfer policies, and the resources available to support their academic progress.
  • Contribute to the Transfer Resource Center's mission of fostering student success, retention, and graduation by taking on additional duties and responsibilities as needed, always with a focus on enhancing the transfer student experience.

EDUCATION:
bachelor's degree; preferably in education, counseling, or a related field.


EXPERIENCE:
Two (2) years of experience working in higher education, particularly in transfer services or academic advising.


SKILLS & ABILITIES:


  • Knowledge of prior learning assessment methodologies and credit transfer policies.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail for evaluating transcripts and prior documentation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with diverse stakeholders, including students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast paced environment.
  • Familiarity with student information systems and database management software; PeopleSoft preferred.
  • Understanding of the Family Rights and Privacy Act and other legal issues relating to academic records or academic history preferred.
