Deputy Head of Department (m/f/d)

For the Pachyderm Department (Elephants, Hippos, Rhinos, Children's Zoo)
Full-time position (39 hours/week) starting as soon as possible.


Your responsibilities:


As the deputy head of department, you will shape and oversee the professional leadership and effective organization of a team of approximately 12-15 animal keepers in the absence of the head of department.


  • Further development of animal husbandry, animal care, and animal presentation in the department at a high professional level and in line with current knowledge (in close cooperation with the head of department, curator, and senior animal keeper)
  • Coordination and supervision of daily departmental work (including feeding, enrichment, training, and show quality)
  • Documentation of animal observations and work processes
  • Participation in the creation of the duty roster
  • Active and daily implementation and monitoring of legal and internal occupational safety and health on site
  • Ensuring daily checks of enclosure safety
  • Development and implementation of natural and continuous animal enrichment as well as relevant and goaloriented animal training
